Very few could imagined, in the wake of covid in 2020, that the A380 could have such a comeback and still be extremely relevant to many airlines at this point. Airlines that owned them in 2020 just couldn’t get them out of their fleets and operations fast enough. Now, however, that paradigm has flipped upside down with many of those carriers bringing, in some cases reluctantly, the mighty jumbo back into service. Among the carriers that have chosen to bring back the Airbus A380 and that have been able to make it financially viable is British Airways. Not only are the BA A380s here now, they will be for quite some time into the future as the airline prepares to retrofit them with new premium interiors.
An Entirely Redesigned First Class on British Airways’ A380s
British Airways has decided to extend its Airbus A380s operating lifespan. There is no doubt about the fact that the A380 will remain in the BA fleet for quite some time. The British national carrier will be retrofitting its fleet of mega-jumbos with totally new and redesigned First Class cabins. A much needed upgrade I will add. These planes despite serving some high demand routes for premium cabins, feature one of the oldest first class products. Older than what seen on the 787s or even on some of the oldest 777s.

BA finally introduces a totally enclosed suite on its A380’s First Class. The prior version didn’t even go near the levels of privacy this new revisited product will offer. First class passengers will finally be able to totally isolate themselves from the rest of the cabin by closing the suite door.

The seat itself has been redesigned from the ground up. It will be a very generous 92cm wide, with an ottoman placed on the other end of the suite, under the IFE screen. The otoman can be used to eat in the company of another first class passenger, exactly as seen on SWISS’ first class.

The IFE screen also got a much needed revamping. In the new British Airways First Class Suites passengers will enjoy their favorite shows on a 32-inch 4K resolution screen.
However this first class does remind me of something similar.
The computer renderings published by British Airways of its new First Class product do remind me of something seen before. Albeit in different colors and styles, the new BA first class cabin does look a lot like what Emirates offers on its A380s and Boeing 777. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below, I’d love to know your thoughts.

The BA Airbus A380 here to stay for many years to come
As mentioned above, the decision of retrofitting its A380s with new first class cabins translates to one thing. The A380s are here to stay for quite some time into British Airways’ future.
The first retrofitted A380 will enter service in mid-2026. Therefore, these planes will have to remain in activity for around 10 years after that to make any financial sense.

British Airways is among very few airlines capable of making the A380 really live up to its full potential. The carrier is blessed with many routes capable of sustaining the high capacity offered by the aircraft type, even in premium cabins. Also, Heathrow’s chronic slot shortage makes this the this one of the most relevant planes for the British carrier.
