After a few tough years going through the early 2020s Cathay Pacific is finding its stride again regaining lost ground. Financial results are looking positive and the airline is investing significantly, once again, in its fleet. The airline is among those that have decided to order the new Boeing mega twin engine aircraft the 777X. However, it seems the initial order wasn't enough, with more put on order this week.

Cathay Pacific Becomes Asia Pacific's Largest Boeing 777-9 Operator
Cathay Pacific had a pre-existing order of 21 Boeing 777X planes. That in of itself was a very vote of confidence in the new triple-seven version. That order, as has been released by Boeing, will grow by 14 more units.
What that boils down to is a massive order for what will be the largest passenger aircraft in production and will make Cathay Pacific the largest carrier of the new generation of Boeing 777s in the Asia-Pacific region. You could see the Boeing 777X as a status symbol of Cathay Pacific's new rise in the post covid era.
35 Boeing 777-9 Aircraft: Fleet Expansion Details
Boeing's order book now shows a total of 35 Boeing 777X ordered by Cathay pacific. 21 previously ordered and the remaining 14 as an order expansion in August 2025.
The entirety of those 35 Boeing 777s ordered is for the 9 variant which is the larger of the two developed. Also the whole 35 units are firms orders meaning that we are sure that at some point in the future Cathay Pacific's fleet will include all of them.

Boeing 777-9 Fuel Efficiency: 20% Reduction in Emissions
The Boeing 777x family comes with significant performance enhancements which will be noticeable both to passengers and the airline that operates them.
The biggest changes that will differentiate, performance-wise, the Boeing 777x from the 777-300ER (the most popular variant of the prior generation) are:
- Wings
- Engines

The Boeing 777X will have a larger wingspan and wing surface. One of the limiting factors of the Boeing 777-300ER were its wings, they were too small to provide optimal lift for ULR operations. This is the reason why the Boeing 777-300ER consistently cruises at lower altitudes than the Boeing 787 or other Airbus counterparts. The Boeing 777X will solve this by having folding wingtips which allow to have a high capacity cabin while fitting in the standard sized airport gates around the world.
The engines will help, in unison with the re-designed wings, achieve higher fuel efficiency and lower noise emissions. Boeing estimates that the new generation of Boeing 777 will burn 20% less fuel than the prior and generate 40% less noise.
The noise is something that will undoubtedly be noticeable in the cabin. If you've ever flown a Boeing 777-300ER you'll know the ride is not a quiet one, if if seated ahead of the engines in the premium cabins.
In terms of range the Boeing 777-9 will cover routes up to 7,295 nautical miles, or 13,510 km, long.

Hong Kong Hub Strategy: Connecting Global Long-Haul Routes
Now call it a coincidence, if you believe in them, but the current Cathay Pacific fleet has exactly 35 Boeing 777-300ERs. It is plausible to think that these planes will be gradually replaced by the Boeing 777-9s as years go on.
There will still be some time to wait before the first 777-9 actually lands at Hong Kong International Airport. The aircraft is still undergoing its certification process and we still don't have a clear date when it'll complete it and enter commercial service.
These 35 planes won'd be arriving anytime soon. However, when they do they'll come with all the latest bells and whistles. Cathay Pacific will fit their latest and most up to date interiors on these aircraft, including its Aria Suites.
I can clearly see the Boeing 777-9 becoming the flagship aircraft of the Hong Kong based airline's fleet and it also, along with the Airbus A350, becoming a workhorse of long haul operations.
