Emirates Orders Further 95 Boeing Planes at Dubai Air Show

It is no secret that Emirates is one of Boeing's most important clients. No doubt about the fact that they are the most important client in the Middle east region. The Dubai based airline is the largest Boeing 777 user worldwide and is also heavily involved in Boeing's 777X program. It was therefore easy to forecast that some big news was ready to be released on home turf, at the Dubai air show, about an order with Boeing, just as I mentioned in yesterday's post. It was even easier to anticipate as EK had not made any major Boeing related moves at the Paris Air Show. So let's take a closer look at Emirates' latest Boeing plane order at the Dubai Air Show.

The Emirates Boeing Order At The Dubai Air Show 2023

The order announced today by Emirates and Boeing is a big one. The Dubai based airline has in fact placed a firm order for a massive 95 Boeing planes. Something that will for sure raised some eyebrows at DWC.

Emirates has both ordered some new planes and modified some existing orders. So here's exactly what the agreement with Boeing states.

Emirates has ordered further:

  • 55 Boeing 777-9
  • 35 Boeing 777-8
  • 5 Boeing 787

Additionally the airline has changed its standing order for Boeing 787s. EK previously had on order 30 Boeing 787-9 which have been transformed into orders for:

  • 20 Boeing 787-9
  • 10 Boeing 787-10

Therefore Boeing will also join the not so long list of 787-10 operators. With these additional orders in the Boeing order book Emirates has now a backlog of 205 777X planes with the Seattle based aircraft manufacturer.

Retaining the Largest Boeing 777 Operator Title

With this further order Emirates, which currently owns an operates a fleet of 145 777 in all variants, will retain its title as largest user of the aircraft type.

The new 777X planes will effectively replace the Boeing 777-300ER on the high capacity long range routes while the Boeing 787s will fill the place that used to be of the A330 until 2016, on lower capacity shorter route destinations.

When Are The First Deliveries Scheduled For?

Another piece of information we got from the Dubai Air Show is when Emirates expects to start receiving these new planes. The magical year should be 2025. Hopefully there will be no more delays in the program and we'll finally be able to see this majestic new mega jet in action on Emirates routes around the world.
