Iberia Receives The First Ever Airbus A321XLR

The landscape of civil aviation has changed massively in the past couple of decades. Gradually the large quad-jets have given way to the highly fuel efficient twin-jets. Not only has this been the case but we’ve also assisted to more and more narrow body planes being used for long range services. This has been possible to the leaps and bounds technology has made forward in terms of fuel efficiency and reliability. At the forefront of pushing the boundaries of technology in terms of narrow body long range operations is the Airbus A321XLR. An aircraft which just received its type certification and is now ready to enter service with its launch airline, Iberia.

Iberia Receives The First Ever Airbus A321XLR

The first A321XLR, the first of what will be a long series of planes of this type that Airbus will produce, although just delivered already has quite a story. Airbus delivered the aircraft to the Spanish national carrier on October 30th 2024. However, the plane left the assembly line all the way back on April 19th 2024. Things weren’t particularly rushed as the type certificate was still to be released. Between April and its delivery the aircraft flew 5 times on test flights until finally flying to its new home in Madrid under registration number EC-OIL.

Its first flight under the Iberia callsign took place on October 30th with the positioning flight from Hamburg to Madrid. Barajas (MAD) airport will from now on be EC-OIL’s new home.

However there is more to talk about in regard to this planes’ history. Initially IAG, Iberia’s parent company, had planned for the first Airbus A321XLR to fly with Aer Lingus. The plane was later diverted to Iberia following tensions between the Irish airline’s crew, regarding contract renewals, and IAG itself.

As this is a long range capable plane, with a range north of 8,700km, the cabin configuration reflects this. The Spanish carrier opted to fit lie-flat beds in business class in a 1-1 layout with over 7 rows for a total of 14 seats. Economy is in the standard 6 abreast 3-3 layout totaling 168 seats.

Where Will Iberia’s First A321XLR Fly?

There won’t be much to wait to finally see the first A321XLR operate a commercial flight. In just a few short weeks the airline will be using this new state-of-the-art long range narrow body plane on its Madrid to Boston flight IB347. A flight which will see the little airliner cover the route in just over 9 hours.

This seems to be the future for many airlines. Aircraft such as the A321XLR will finally make thin and long routes financially viable for many carriers across the globe. So be prepared to fly a narrow body on more long range flights years move on.
