Malaysia Airlines 1st Airbus A330neo Touches Down in Kuala Lumpur

In the '90s Malaysia Airlines was one of the most prominent airlines in the aviation industry. The carrier had risen to a first tier status by offering comfortable and convenient connections between Europe, Asia, and Australia. If you booked a flight between these regions anytime before 2010 chances are that one of the options was MAS. However the past 15 years haven't been all that kind to the Malaysian flag carrier. The airline faced many financial hardship and to add insult to injury the airline also suffered some tragic incidents which stained its reputation. Thereafter the carrier has been hard at work to restructure its operations and fleet and rebuild its reputation. As for the fleet renovation the airline is currently working on its long range division with the latest arrival being a brand new A330neo.

The First Malaysia Airlines A330neo Touches Down in Kuala Lumpur

As part of its fleet restructuring Malaysia Airlines has received its first Airbus A330neo. The addition of the A330neo to its fleet marks the entry of the Malaysian carrier in the group of those that operate both the A330neo and the A350. These two being Airbus' most advanced long range wide body airliners.

The newest Malaysia Airlines fleet addition, registered as 9M-MNG, touched down for the first time in its new home of Kuala Lumpur on November 29th 2024. The delivery flight covered the distance separating Toulouse and Kuala Lumpur in just over 13 hours. The aircraft is an Airbus A330-900 which is the larger variant of the A330neo family.

9M-MNG is the first of 20 of the type that will gradually join the Malaysia Airlines fleet in the coming years. The entire lot of planes though was not directly purchased by the carrier. The 20 Malaysia Airlines A330neo are part of a dry-lease deal it has with leasing firm Avalon. The remaining 19 Airbus A330-900 will join the Malaysia Airlines fleet through 2028.

Currently the airline has a fleet boasting 23 ceo generation A330s, which is the old version of the aircraft. Therefore, the arrival of these 20 A330neo will serve to replace the current fleet of A330-200s and A330-300s. The neo generation is a huge improvement other the old version. Not only does it allow to save fuel, and therefore money, but it also has a greater range allowing it to serve longer routes.

Lastly let's touch base on the aircraft configuration chosen by Malaysia Airlines for the A330neo. The southeast Asian airline has opted for a 2 class configuration featuring:

  • 28 Business class seats in a 1-2-1 layout
  • 269 Economy class seats in 2-4-2 layout

However 24 of the 269 Economy seats are classified as extra-legroom and are sold at a premium over the standard economy seats.

How Will MAS Use Its New A330-900s?

The new Airbus A330-900s will immediately be deployed on some of the highest yielding routes. Specifically the plan is to have them operating flights from the airline's base of Kuala Lumpur to Australia and New Zealand. URL flights will therefore remain an A350-900 exclusive duty. The A350s will be the only aircraft of the fleet used for the flagship routes to London and soon also Paris CDG.
