The middle east in recent years has been a fundamentally important region for the big two aircraft manufacturers. The region has a vibrant and dynamic aviation industry with well established players and some newcomers. The airline involved in today’s story is a bit of both. Airbus has disclosed an A330neo deal for flyadeal.

Saudia Orders But flyadeal get – The Disclosed A330neo Order

That might sound a little confusing but I’ll sort it out immediately. Flyadeal is a relatively new airline in the middle east landscape. The carrier started operations in 2017 launched by the parent company Saudia, the Saudi national carrier. The airline became the group’s low cost carrier which entered competition with other similar carriers such as flynas.

The airline has since affirmed itself in domestic and short range international routes to key destinations in Pakistan and the middle eastern region. Now though, with the latest order disclosed by Airbus, it seems the carrier is preparing to launch flights beyond the existing boundaries.

Saudia, flyadeal’s parent company, has just disclosed (meaning the order had already previously been placed) an order for 10 Airbus A330neo aircraft which will be joining flyadeal’s fleet in coming years. The specific variant is the A330-900 which is the largest of the neo family.

The aircraft is ideal for high capacity frequent services or in alternative long range routes. The arrival of the new planes will allow flyadeal to tap into some markets previously unaccessible using solely the A320 family of planes.

Similar Move to flyDubai Two Years Ago

We’ve seen more LCCs recently ordering aircraft in the wide body segment. flyadeal choice of ordering A330-900 wide body planes follows a major force in the region by two years. Namely flyDubai just 2 years ago at the Paris Air Show placed its first wide body order opting for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Middle eastern low cost carriers are looking to extend their reach, in a similar fashion to what the full service carriers did a couple of decades ago.
