Tourists are back in vast numbers in Thailand. Airlines around the world are either starting new services or resuming pre-existing ones that were suspended due to covid. Air Asias, with its Thai Air Asia X subsidiary, is one of the big presences in the low-cost segment in the country. The main hub for the airline is of course Bangkok. A little-known fact about the Thai capital is that it has two airports and Thai Air Asia X is about to move its operations from one to the other. Here’s when and why it’ll happen.
When Is Thai Air Asia X Moving to Don Mueang Airport?
The switch will take place on October 1st 2024. Just ahead of the all-important northern hemisphere winter season. Many, from colder countries particularly during the festivities, make their way to Thailand to enjoy some warm weather and its beautiful islands and beaches.
Don Mueang Airport is Bangkok’s secondary airport. Actually it is the city’s main international airport before Suvarnabhumi international opened for business in 2006. Since then the airport became a hub for many low cost carriers including the airlines of the Air Asia group.
Why Is The Airline Moving to The Smaller Airport?
There are at least a couple of reason for the low-cost carrier to move back operations to Don Mueang Airport after a temporary stay at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
The other airlines of the Air Asia group still operate a considerable number of flights in and out of Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport. Therefore, moving allows to consolidate operations and allow better connectivity between long-range and short-range services.
The second reason if that having all operations in one airport is cheaper and the costs of Don Mueang airport itself are lower than those of BKK which has many more facilities.
So, make sure not to miss your flight on Air Asia X from Bangkok after October 1st by getting to the right airport in time for you flight.
