India’s aviation market has been on a constant growth trajectory. Therefore, there will be an ever-growing demand for MRO facilities in the country that Air India is hoping to cater to with the construction of a mega structure in Bengaluru International Airport. Here’s what the airline has in plane for BLR airport and how it will help fuel the greater aviation market’s growth.
Air India Starts Constructing its Mega MRO Facility in Bengaluru
Air India means business this time around with TATA taking over the airline. Things have been moving quickly for the Indian flag carrier. The parent company rapidly laid out the plan for the airline’s merger with Vistara and placed massive aircraft orders to renovate an ageing fleet.
With those first crucial steps out of the way, the airline is moving onto another operational aspect of the business, ensuring efficient maintenance, repairs, and overhauls of what will be a rapidly growing fleet. Therefore, the airline in this respect has just broken ground on the construction of what will be a mega-project for the carrier. Air India is building a major MRO facility at Bengaluru International Airport.
A facility which will be able to perform extensive maintenance and repairs on the group’s aircraft. The center will be within Bengaluru’s airport perimeter on a 35-acre piece of land.
The local government of Karnataka, SIA (Singapore Airlines Group), and Air India all joined forces to bring this mega-project to life. SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) will be the most valuable partner of the lot as it will transfer knowledge over to Air India’s teams once construction is complete.
The Airline’s Larger Plan and Ambitions
The goal is an ambitious and necessary one to enable Air India’s planned growth plan. The airline intends to become more self-reliant and eventually self-sufficient in terms of MRO needs in the coming years. If you stop and think about it, this is a necessary condition for the airline which will eventually operate one of the largest fleets in the world. Relying on external MRO suppliers with possible supply chain constraints and delays to consider, just won’t cut it.
Air India dearly needs a facility as the one being constructed in Bengaluru. Also, this is not a one of project. Air India is enhancing its line maintenance facilities across its network. All in the effort to reduce to a minimum disruption to its operations.
Finally, the construction of the Bengaluru MRO will have positive effects well beyond the facility itself. Once operational it will create 1,200 job opportunities and support approximately 200 small and medium local enterprises. Therefore, having a much wider positive effect on the community.
