Fiji Airways is one of the main links to the rest of the world for the Pacific island state. The island relies heavily on air transport for both imports, exports and drawing tourists to fuel the local economy. Fiji Airways plays a key role in all of this. The flag carrier of Fiji has just launched its fifth passenger scheduled flight to Canberra, Australia‘s capital.
Why Is The New Fiji Airways Flight FJ951 to Canberra Important?
Australia represents for Fiji the largest market for tourists arriving on the island. Therefore serving all major Australian east coast cities is indeed very important for the airline and the country itself.
Australia is the largest and richest country in the region which can be reached within 5 hours of flying time. That short flight time makes the tropical island of Fiji a very attractive destination for Aussie holidays.
Serving all the most populous cities on the eastern side of Australia should help attract more tourists especially as the warmer months draw closer.

The Plane Chosen For The Flight
Fiji Airways obviously doesn’t have the largest fleet out there. Currently the carrier operates a 21 aircraft fleet with only 12 capable of covering medium and long range routes.
Specifically the new Nadi to Canberra flight will see the FJ Boeing 737 MAX-8 cover the route. This is a single aisle aircraft best equipped for medium range routes just like this one.
Fiji Airways has configured this aircraft type in a two class layout with:
- 8 Business Class recliner seats in a 2-2 layout.
- 162 Economy Class seats in a standard 3-3 layout.
All seats are pretty much equal on this plane so there aren’t any tricks that can get you extra leg room.
