Air France-KLM are another of the big European conglomerates of civil aviation. The others being:
The group as such came into existence in the early 2000s. In 2004 the French flag carrier, Air France, and the Dutch flag carrier, KLM, joined forces. They were pushed to do so as in the aftermath of 9/11 the airline industry suffered a heavy blow and carriers had to consolidate to survive in the new landscape.
Since then the two flag carriers that make up the Air France-KLM Group, operate as separate airlines but operate in unison for all other aspects. The two airlines share financial results and also make aircraft orders as a single entity.
Air France and KLM also share the same frequent flyer programme, Flying Blue. This programme is also shared with the third airline of the group the LCC Transavia.
