KLM is all set to start a new service in North America. In just a few months’ time the Dutch airline will be adding the 21st North American destination to its route network. Late 2024 will see KLM commence services from Amsterdam to Portland, Oregon. However more than starting a route from scratch the airline will be replacing a fellow SkyTeam airline on the PDX-AMS route. Here’s how and when.
About KLM and its new KL615 Portland to Amsterdam Route
As I mentioned above KLM will not be starting up a route from scratch. It will be replacing fellow SkyTeam airline Delta on the route. Starting October 27th 2024, KLM flights will take over the current Delta Air Lines service. Possibly to free aircraft Delta needs to deploy elsewhere.
KLM has announced it will be using its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners for the new KL615 service. This plane, looking at business class, offers one of the better hard products the carrier has on its planes. In fact, the premium cabin has a 1-2-1 layout which is much more private compared to what is present on many 777s and all the A330 fleet. Every seat on the 787s has direct aisle access in Business class. The overall cabin configuration features:
- 30 Business Class lie-flat seats
- 21 Premium Economy seats in a 2-3-2 layout
- 224 Economy Class seats 3-3-3 layout

KLM’s Growing North American Network
Portland will further expand an already impressive route network KLM operated in America. With a near to nill domestic aviation market Amsterdam is arguably the only solely connection focused airport in Europe. Even more than its sister-airline Air France, KLM’s core business is that of connecting points across the globe transiting via Amsterdam.
