It’s not airshow season but it sure feels like it with all these orders pouring in for Boeing and Airbus. In the same day both manufacturers received triple digit orders for their narrow body planes. The largest of them all though was EasyJet’s massive order for A320 family planes.

The EasyJet Airbus A320 Family Order Details
The order easyJet announced to have placed with Airbus is massive. The European low-cost carrier has decided to order a total of 157 planes. That includes both A320neo and A321neo aircraft types. To be precise:
- 56 Airbus A320neo
- 101 Airbus A321neo
What makes the order all the more impressive is the fact that these are all firm orders. The addition of this new order will boost the carrier’s replacement of older planes. This will unlock monetary savings by reducing significantly the amount of fuel burnt per flight. Also, the A320neo and A321neo are much quieter than their predecessors which means they will be future-proof against noise pollution regulations.

Upsizing Planes in Its Standing Order
The Airbus easyJet deal also includes some changes to the previously standing order. The low-cost carrier has decided to upsize some of the planes it will receive from Airbus. Specifically, 35 out of the 125 A320neo still to be delivered have been converted to A321neo orders.
Why did they make this decision? My take is that as more airports become slot-limited it is necessary to have larger planes to increase capacity to them. This is the same reason for which the A380, despite all odds, has made a comeback in the post-COVID era.
EasyJet’s Current Airbus Order Book
easyJet has one of the largest backlogs in the Airbus order book. Currently, the airline is awaiting delivery of a staggering 315 planes. That is split into:
- 146 A320neo
- 169 A321neo
