The last few years have been particularly tough on Finnair. The Finnish national carrier used to serve an extensive network in the far east wit flights to major and secondary cities. First the pandemic and then the closure of Russian airspace have severely limited the airline’s operations. Nonetheless the airline is trying to recover lost ground by relaunching, where possible, flights to the far east although this means truly ULR services in order to avoid Russian airspace. 2024 will see another destination in the region rejoin the Finnair network, Nagoya in Japan. Here are the details about flight AY079 from Helsinki to Nagoya.
Finnair’s Fourth Japanese Destination
Nagoya will become Finnair’s fourth destination in Japan once flights commence. AY79 won’t be a completely new service as it is a resumption after years of absence. However it’ll be only the third city to see service from this carrier in Japan as 2 out of the four flights offer connections to Tokyo’s two airports (Haneda and Narita).
The complete list of destinations served by Finnair in Japan, once AY79 starts operations features:
- Osaka Kansai International Airport (KIX)
- Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT)
- Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND)
- Nagoya International Airport (NGO)
Along with the Japanese destinations Finnair also operates in the far east flights to:
- South Korea – Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN)
- China – Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG)
- Hong Kong – HKIA (HKG)
This further flight is a step in the direction of trying to resume normal operations to the very lucrative market of flight between Europe and the Far East.

The Aircraft for Finnair Flight AY79
The plane chosen for the flight is of course the backbone of the Finnish carrier’s ULR services, the Airbus A350-900. This is also the plane deployed on the other east Asian routes with most units featuring the very unique Finnair business class cabin.
What makes the cabin so unique and different from any other product out there is the fact that going in a completely different direction with every other airline AY has opted for a seat that doesn’t recline. It makes the space comfortable by creating a more sofa-like cozy effect. These seats are produced for the airline by Collins Aerospace.
Business class is in a 1-2-1 layout, while Premium Economy in 2-4-2 and Economy in a standard 3-3-3.
