The Lufthansa Group is a huge user of Airbus planes. Interestingly in the same day though the group opted to purchase a significant amount of Boeing 737 MAX for the German flag carrier, instead of additional A320 family planes, ordering the smaller A220s from Airbus. So let’s take a look at what the news is all about and what it sums up to.

The Lufthansa Group’s A220 Aircraft Order
The Lufthansa group which includes a number of airlines, you can find out which reading this other post, has decided to place a substantial Airbus A220 order.
The order comes on the same day that Boeing announced to have reached an agreement for up to 100 737 MAX planes to be supplied to LH. This is no coincidence. The airline clearly wants to keep both manufacturers happy. However I’m pretty sure Boeing is happier with its deal with the German airline.
The Lufthansa Group has placed a firm order for 40 A220s. It isn’t specified exactly which variant of the aircraft has been ordered. That probably implies that there is somewhat flexibility in the order to switch between the 100 and 300 variants of the jet in coming months and years according to the group’s necessities.
Which operator will get the new planes?
So the order was placed by the Lufthansa Group, which means that the jets will be allocated among the airlines it controls. There is however a hint in the press release. The press release image depicts an A220 wearing the new Lufthansa City Airlines livery. I suppose part of these new plane will therefore join the new regional operator.
It is also possibile that some more planes might join the Swiss fleet as the Helvetic carrier already operates quite a few planes of the type. However we’ll know more in this respect when deliveries draw closer.
Why should we also consider the Boeing order?
Simply because it was decades since Lufthansa, as an airline, not a group hadn’t ordered narrow body planes from Boeing. The fact that the German carrier has opted for the 737 even just to integrate its all Airbus narrow body fleet is big news. Also an order for 100 Boeing 737 MAX kind of dwarfs the 40 A220s ordered.
