Etihad is one of the youngest airlines in the Gulf region. The airline started operating independently when the Abu Dhabi government decided to break away from the previous multi-state flag carrier Gulf Air. Therefore, even Etihad’s loyalty program is quite young. The frequent flyer program was created in 2006 and has just reached quite a significant milestone. Etihad Guest just broke through the 10 million members mark.
10 Million Members In 18 Years of Etihad Guest Program
The airline just announced it broke through the historical mark of 10 million members signed up to its loyalty program EY Guest. A special gift was in store for the ten-millionth member to sign up.
The lucky traveller is granted as a gift to celebrate this special landmark in Etihad’s history an immediate upgrade to Platinum status. Just to put that into context you would need to accrue 125,000 tier miles in a year to reach such a status. Platinum Guest status comes with a long list of perks to make travelling that much more relaxing and enjoyable. Such as:
- Priority check-in
- Complimentary lounge access
- Priority boarding
- Free seat selection
- And more
Therefore, at least for a year this lucky EY traveller will enjoy exclusive perks offered by the airline.
How Did The Airline Accelerate Membership Sign-ups?
Etihad did use a smart strategy to accelerate membership sign-ups to reach the 10 million mark. In order to boost its numbers EY introduced free on-board wi-fi packages accessible only if you are a Guest program member. They have also been smart about promoting this service feature as when you book a ticket with them it is extremely easy to sign up to the program in just a few clicks.
This move helped accelerate membership sign-ups and, in turn, reach the 10 million mark much faster. However, you must keep in mind that at the moment free wi-fi is available on Etihad’s wide body fleet.
