The concept of business class has evolved massively over the last 20 to 30 years. As first class has progressively disappeared from most aircraft cabins, travellers have come to expect more from Business class. One of the airlines that has most revolutionised the whole concept of business class is Qatar Airways. Although we can’t ignore the airline’s business class consistency issues across its fleet, it also can’t be understated how much the Qatari airline has raised the bar pushing all carriers to elevate their game. Now Qatar Airways is looking to elevate its game once again introducing something we all associate to first class to its business class product.
Qatar Airways Introduces Caviar on Select Business Class Routes
I think Qatar Airways is the airline that changed the common expectation of business class travel. Ok granted, it was British Airways with its Club World to have disrupted the market first. However, with the introduction of the QSuite Qatar is the latest large disruptor in the premium cabin segment.
Now the latest addition to an already extremely strong product. Qatar Airways is going to start offering complimentary Caviar on a selection of its flights, in business class.
If you’ve travelled in premium cabins, you’ll know that caviar is something usually served only in first class. Caviar is the quintessential first-class menu item, along with a flute of fine champagne.
On Which Routes Will Caviar Be Available in Qatar Airways Business Class?
Caviar will become available in business class but not across the entire network. Only a selection of 13 routes will allow passengers to enjoy this fine dining experience. The route selection features some of the highest yielding destinations in Qatar Airways’ network. Those destinations are:
- Boston
- Dallas
- Hong Kong
- Houston
- London
- Los Angeles
- Melbourne
- New York
- Paris
- Sao Paulo
- Singapore
- Sydney
- Washington
Caviar will become part of the Business class offering starting August 15th 2024. But why take such a decision?
Why Has the Airline Decided to do So?
The decision to introduce something that is associated with first class mirrors what the airline thinks about its business class product and how it wants to place it on the market. Although QR has stated it is working on an updated version of its first class to eventually be installed on its fleet, the QSuite is marketed as a higher-level business class product. Time and time have the QSuites been marketed as a hybrid business-first class product, more than just a business class. So much so that the airline strong of that idea removed first class from its planes.
Offering caviar in business class further reinforces the message that Qatar Airways wants to place upper travel class as a superior business class. A travel class that can offer what some first classes fail to. Let me know if you have a different point of view on how to read into this QR decision in the comments below.
