Westjet is preparing to launch its newest ULR service. Currently the Canadian carrier operates year round ultra long range flights to London Heathrow and Paris CDG from its base in Calgary, Alberta. However in summer of 2024 along with returning seasonal flights the airline is ready to launch a new service to further enhance flight offering. Here’s all that you must know, for now, about WestJet’s new flight to Seoul Incheon, South Korea.
WestJet’s First Flight to South Korea
The flight is still pending regulatory approval, therefore we don’t have a flight number and tickets are still to go on sale. However there are some interesting facts to talk about regarding this newest addition to the WestJet network.
As mentioned above, this new flight will be part of the carrier’s summer 2024 schedule. Also part of a much wider plan of making Calgary a major connecting hub for incoming and outgoing traffic to north America.
The flight will also be the only direct option available between Calgary, Alberta, and the capital of South Korea. All current travel options include a stopover in another major Canadian airport. You’d need to stop off either in Toronto or Vancouver flying either Air Canada or WestJet in codeshare with Korean Air.
The flight makes sense as Korea has risen to be a major tourist destination in recent years. However there is also a quite big community of emigrated first and second generation Koreans in North America which do travel back to South Korea to visit family and friends.
If all goes according to plan, flights will commence service on May 17th 2024.
The Schedule For The New Calgary to Seoul Flight
The airline will be dipping its toes in the water with this new Calgary to Seoul flight. It clearly doesn’t want to commit too many resources on the service as it isn’t sure to be able to fill the planes from the get go.
Therefore WestJet is going to operate the new flight on a 3 times weekly basis with this timetable:
Flight Number | Departure Airport | Airport Code | Departure Time | Arrival Airport | Airport Code | Arrival Time | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
TBD | Calgary | YYC | 17:55 | Seoul | ICN | 20:45 + 1 | |
TBD | Seoul | ICN | 22:45 | Calgary | YYC | 18:15 |
The Plane For The New WestJet Calgary to Seoul Flight
The flight is made possibile by the fleet of 8 Boeing 787-9 WestJet currently operates on its longest services to Europe and soon Asia.
This is the only ULR capable plane currently in the WestJet fleet. These planes are setup with in a 3 class configuration, featuring:
- 16 Business Class seats in a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone layout
- 28 Premium Economy Class seats in a 2-3-2 layout
- 276 Economy Class seats in a 3-3-3 layout.
Now, in economy apart from the emergency exit rows there are no superior seats worth snatching. Pretty much all seats are equal on the WestJet 787-9s.
The business class seats are flatbed seats. They are quite a nice product as they are Collins Aerospace Super Diamond seats. A type of seat seen on some premium airlines too, such as Etihad.
