LATAM has rapidly become the largest and most influential player in south American aviation. The group which has its origins in the merger between the Brazilian TAM and the Chilean LAN will soon also become the largest operator of the Boeing 787 in whole of latin America.

LATAM’s Further 5 Boeing 787 Order
The main piece of news is that the south American airline LATAM has placed a new order with Boeing. Five more Boeing 787 Dreamliners will be making their way down to South America. These planes add to the preexisting order bringing the grand total to 46 aircraft. Of those 33 have been delivered, therefore 13 still are still to join the LATAM fleet.
We still don’t know which variant these 5 additional planes will be. The carrier’s press release does repeatedly refer to the Boeing 787-9 and its range. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that that will be the variant chosen. Also another clue in this direction comes from the aircraft deliveries of the past few years. The airline, in the past 8 years, has only taken delivery of Boeing 787-9s.
LATAM, The Largest Dreamliner Operator in South America
Along with being one of the largest airlines in South America, LATAM will also by far be the largest operator of Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes. Once all planes ordered are delivered the airline will own and operate a fleet of 46 units.
The planes will power the airline’s growing international and intercontinental route network along with helping to offer greater capacity on high demand medium range routes.
Which And How Many of Each Variant Does The Airline Own?
Currently, as of December 28th 2023, the airline boasts a fleet comprised of 33 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. These split up in:
- 10 787-8
- 23 787-9
Both variants feature a quite simple 2 class configuration. They both are fitted with a 30 seat business class cabin, while economy class seats up to 217 passengers on the smaller 8 variant and 283 on the larger 9.
