Additional Two New Leonardo Express Night Services Between Rome and Fiumicino

One of the most convenient ways to make move between downtown Rome and Rome Fiumicino Airport is the Leonardo Express rail line. This service is an express regional line that links Romes main international airport to the central station of Rome Termini in about 30 minutes. What makes it a very good option is the many trains available throughout the day. Up to one train every 15 minutes at peak hours and on off peak hours 2 trains per hour. The issue with this rail line is that it shuts down late at night only to come back online in the early hours of the morning. That creates a bit of a headache for those passengers arriving on late night services. To slightly alleviate this problem the italian rail company, Trenitalia, is adding two new night services. Spoiler alert the new services are helpful but not all that much.

Two new Night Leonardo Express Services Added to the Schedule

Let’s start by saying that Trenitalia is adding 2 new services, however, that actually should be stated as one service in each direction. What is actually happening is that an additional service is being added from Rome Termini to Fiumicino Airport and one in the opposite direction. I must also add that this is better than nothing as until now after 11PM your options became very limited. Now that problem moves one hour later at midnight.

Total daily services, with these new schedule addition, become 128. The new Leonardo Express services will depart at:

  • 23:35 from Roma Termini arriving at 00:07 in Rome Fiumicino Airport
  • 00:23 from Rome Fiumicino arriving at 00:55 in Rome Termini

The new schedule addition will surely become a safety net for those travellers arriving late at night to protect from the possibility of flight delays.

The cost of the ticket remains the same, even for these late night services. That is 14 Euro per train ride. Non super cheap but much better than many other airports around the world.

New Ways To Pay The Airport Train Fare

Trenitalia recently added new ways to pay the train fare, making it very convenient and easy also for international travellers. It is no longer necessary to buy a physical ticket or download the app, you can instead tap your credit or debit card on one of the validating machines at Rome Termini or Fimicino Airport and just board the train. The only caveat is that the card must be issued by AMEX, Visa or Mastercard. Upon tapping on you will be charged the standard 14 Euro fare for the train ride between the airport and the city.
