I was about to turn 13 the last time that I flew on a Qantas flight departing Rome Fiumicino International Airport. It was December 2002 and shortly afterwards the Australian airline would have announced the closure of most of its European destinations. However, since 2022 the airline has re-entered the European market with its direct non-stop flights from Perth. Among the services it launched is the closest major airport to my home, Rome Fiumicino. The great news regarding QF5 flight is that is has been once again confirmed for the third year running.
Qantas Confirms Perth to Rome Fiumicino QF5 Flights for 2025
The route has sparked quite a bit of interest among passengers looking to travel between Australia and Europe. Not only for passengers originating from Perth but also among those located on the east coast. Transiting via Perth means that you won’t need to make your stopover in a foreign country, instead you can do it before leaving Australia. The interest was enough to convince the carrier to confirm the service for 2023, 2024 and now even 2025.
There wasn’t an official press release or statement, but simply searching for the flight on Qantas’ website you can find and book seats aboard QF5 starting mid-June 2025.
QF5 from Perth to Rome Fiumicino is operated using one of the airline’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The same aircraft used on the other direct flights to Europe from Perth (London and Paris). These planes feature a 3 class configuration offering:
- 42 Business Class Seats in a 1-2-1 layout produced by Thompson Aero (Vantage XL)
- 28 Premium Economy Class Seats in a 2-3-2 layout
- 166 Economy Class Economy Class seats in a 3-3-3 layout
The flight, however, is only seasonal. Flights start in June and terminate in Fall. A service which is clearly leisure travel oriented and focused.
About Qantas’ Return to Rome
The early 2000s saw Qantas withdraw from many of its European sectors. The rising costs of fuel and the fierce middle eastern carrier’s competition were too much for the Australian airline to take on.
The issue for Qantas on routes to Europe has never been demand. The country has huge expat communities and numerous people of European descent. Also, Australia is seen as a major tourist destination for many European holidaymakers.
The issue has always been the excessive costs of making a stop in a foreign country somewhere along the way. In the early 2000s the airport of choice was Singapore, later Dubai.
However, with highly fuel-efficient planes now available, the airline can avoid making a stopover in foreign airports away from one of its hubs, therefore, reducing the operating costs of each Europe-bound flight. When Project Sunrise flights become reality Qantas will be able to avoid stops full stop, even on Perth’s home turf.
