Italy is always pretty high up on the holiday destination wish list. The first step to organising a holiday in Italy is figuring out how to get there. That means look up flights, and if you are similar to me you’ll be looking at direct flight options first and then the rest. Luckily the new, currently state owned, Italian airline ITA Airways already serves US airports and will further expand US to Italy flights in 2023. Here are which flights ITA Airways operates to and from the United States.
Which Airport Does ITA Fly From In Italy?
Before getting started on the actual ITA Airways US to Italy flights, I must clarify one aspect of the Italian airline’s operations. The airline’s intercontinental hub is the airport of Rome Fiumicino. Therefore the vast majority of long haul flights fly in and out of Rome. There are some exceptions to this rule though, as we’ll later look in to.
The Current ITA Airways Italy US Flights
As of April 2023 the new Italian airline, which took over Alitalia operations in 2021, serves 4 destinations in the US. 3 on the east coast and 1 on the west coast. However as mentioned before that’ll change in the coming months. ITA Airways’ 4 US destinations currently are:
- Boston (BOS)
- Los Angeles (LAX)
- Miami (MIA)
- New York (JFK)
The first 3 ITA Airways US destinations on the list are served exclusively with flights to Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) However New York (JFK) is the exception to the rule. JFK has ITA Airways direct flights to both Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Milan Malpensa (MXP). Therefore if you’re looking to book a flight to Italy from New York on ITA Airways you have 2 cities with direct options.
Which New US Flights Will ITA Fly in 2023?
There will be some new additions to the ITA Airways network in the United States in 2023. The Italian flag carrier will be starting operations to and from:
- San Francisco (starting July 1st 2023)
- Washington D.C. (starting June 2nd 2023)
Both of these flights will fly in and out of Rome Fiumicino Airport. If you need to know how to get in and out of FCO airport I’ve got you covered.
What Aircraft Types Does ITA Airways Fly on Its US Flights?
The Italian flag carrier operates an all Airbus fleet. At the moment it’s still modernising its fleet slowly decommissioning its Alitalia inherited older long range planes. That means that there will be a quite substantial equipment difference for some time depending on the route and flight. As of writing this post, ITA Airways flies to the US with its:
- Airbus A350-900
- Airbus A330-200
The A330-200s are quite dated and are on the way out of the fleet. Therefore they are not the most comfortable plane to fly on. Gradually the A330-200s will be replaced by new generation A330-900s.
Looking at cabin layout, the soon to be retired ITA Airways Airbus A330-200 offer:
- 20 Business Class seats
- 17 Premium Economy seats
- 219 Economy Class seats
The Airbus A330-900 that will replace the A330-200s will instead offer:
- 30 Business Class seats
- 24 Premium Economy seats
- 237 Economy Class seats
Last of all the true URL ITA plane, the Airbus A350-900 features:
- 33 Business Class seats
- 301 Economy Class seats
