What kind of decrease are we talking about?

The reduction is a significant one, passenger movements have dropped by 13 percent compared to October 2018. While flights in and out of the airport have gone down by 6%. Also the Hong Kong airport registered a 5.5% reduction of cargo traffic.

Unfortunately this is no surprise to us. It was an easy forecast due to the protest, which have been violent at times, that took place in the ex British colony. Political unrest is never an ally of good airport movement figures. It was only a matter of time before this situation would take its toll on HKIA.

Meanwhile Changes Are Taking Place

The passenger and flight movement data is not the only news which has arrived from Hong Kong International Airport. There is a lot going on to keep the Asian hub always up to date with the latest technologies.

On the 29th of November the recently completed Terminal 1 extension will commence operations. This will add the new L aisle for check in operations and will add 48 desks to the others already operational. This will bring the total number of desks to 369. Also there will be an increase to bring the number of smart check in kiosks to over 100.

What will Happen to Terminal 2?

This happens a as terminal 2 at HKIA will cease operations on the 28th of November. All its functions will be transferred to Terminal 1. Terminal 2 will undergo an extensive renovation which will last until 2024 when the terminal is due to resume service. 2024 is supposed to be the also the year when HKIA will launch its 3 runway system.

Once the renovation has been completed Terminal 2 will resume full operations handling both arrivals and departures.
