Cathay Pacific Will Move Its New York Base To The New Terminal 6

Cathay Pacific has gone through some tough times over the past few years. The airline was massively penalised by the harsh travel restrictions Hong Kong was imposed by the central Chinese government. Not all that much in the midst of the 2020 crisis but in the post covid phase. While all airlines were ramping up operations Cathay was forced to watch from the sidelines until the central government finally decided it was time to open the borders allowing unrestricted travel. All this ordeal has though put a dent in the airline’s image. However things have been looking better for the historical Hong Kong based carrier in the last 12 months. The airline is once again expanding its network and looking to upgrade its infrastructure in some key airport. Airports such as New York’s JFK.

Cathay Pacific And Its New Home At New York JFK Airport

Cathay Pacific will be one of the first airlines to make the new Terminal 6 at JFK International airport their home. The terminal will commence operating in early 2026 and almost from day 1 CX plans to move into the new facility.

The new lounge promises to be quite impressive and somewhere I’d love to pass a few hours waiting for my flight over to Hong Kong on one of the 21 Cathay weekly services.

It will eventually cover a 10,000 square foot surface and will only be the airline’s second facility of this type in the United States. The other being the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) Lounge.

I’m sure the airline will give us more of a sneak peak into what the new Cathay Pacific Lounge will offer at New York JFK Airport once we near completion.

Cathay Present From Day One at The New T6 At JFK Airport

Terminal 6 will be a massive upgrade over its prior state. However it will enter service in 2 stages. A first stage with 5 gates will open its doors to passenger traffic in early 2026, with Cathay Pacific already operating there. The second phase which will complete the project will only enter operation in 2028. From there onwards the new T6 will accomodate up to 9 wide body planes simultaneously at its gates.

All this is part of a massive modernisation project the New York Port Authority has undertaken. The goal is to make JFK airport once again one of the best airports in the country, and the world.
