Copa Airlines is one of the most successful airlines in the American continent. It has made a name for itself, successfully connecting North and South America through its hub in Panama City. Now it’s looking to the future, hedging with new Boeing 737 MAX orders that will be delivered into the 2030s.

Up to 60 more Boeing 737 MAX heading Copa’ way
Copa Airlines is and remains one of Boeing’s most loyal customers in the American continent.
The Panama-based airline continues to invest heavily on the 737 family of aircraft. It has in fact just announced a further order with Boeing for up to 60 more Boeing 737 MAX.
Now I used up to 60 aircraft for a reason, as the order is split between firm and order options. To be precise the order is split in:
- 40 firm aircraft orders
- 20 order options

A mixed aircraft variant order composition
The order has some sort of flexibility baked into it. The flexibility revolves around the aircraft variants that Copa Airlines will be taking into its fleet.
It will be taking a mix of Boeing 737 MAX 8, 9 and 10. Which means Copa Airlines is going for the larger variants of the aircraft. It will be utilizing the MAX 8 for shorter-haul routes, while the MAX 9 and 10 will also feature its business class product with lie-flat beds, which are optimized for long-haul travel.
As you might have realized by carefully reading, COPA has ordered the MAX 10, which is the largest of the 737 family. However, it is also one of the two MAX aircraft still to be certified to date.
That is not an issue, though, regarding this order specifically, as aircraft deliveries are expected quite a way down the road.
An order which feels like hedging aircraft for the future
Despite the order being announced in 2026, the first aircraft is not expected to arrive any time soon in COPA’s fleet. That means that passengers will be flying on older metal for quite some time.
The first newly ordered Boeing 737 MAX from this specific order is expected to arrive in Panama in 2030, with all of the deliveries expected to be completed by 2034.
That means that even during the time frame of the delivery of the aircraft, passengers will still be flying on older metal, on older aircraft configurations and older seats. Making it a bit of a lottery to get the Newer, improved cabins which will come along with the new Boeing 737 MAX.
The order feels like COPA is hedging aircraft for the future, getting ahead of the competition and getting its order in place in the pipeline. A move to avoid having its aircraft age more than it would like to and wait too long to get its hands on new aircraft.
