The latest evolution of Etihad’s fleet has revolved primarily around the adoption of the Airbus A321LR. The narrow body plane is revolutionizing the airline’s route maps and operations. Paving the way for new opportunities. In this post I’ll explain what the Etihad A321LR product is about and where it flies.
What Makes Etihad’s A321LR Stand Out
Etihad has taken a different direction than its peers when it comes to the setup of its new fleet of Airbus A321LR. We’ve seen airlines choose to fit this new generation of long-haul capable aircraft with 2 or even 3 travel classes.
In some cases, as done by Iberia with its A321XLR, fitting a 2-class configuration with Business and Economy Class. In other cases, as with ITA Airways and its A321neo fleet, fitting a 3-class configuration featuring Business, Premium Economy and Economy Class.
- 2 First Class Suites – in a 1-1 layout
- 14 Business Class Seats – in a 1-1 layout
- 144 Economy Class Seats – in a standard 3-3 layout

Is This a Real First And Business Class on Etihad’s A321LR?
The short answer is yes, it absolutely is. There is, however, a nuance to be talked about. First and Business Class seats share the base design. Both were created customizing the Stelia Opera SA platform, and are identical in terms of seat specs.

Where First Class and Business Class on the Etihad Airbus A321LR differ is in some seat details and mainly the service.
Details that differentiate First and Business Class seats are:
- Privacy doors: the two First Class Suites have the doors which create an even more private environment when seated inside. Business Class seats don’t feature doors. They are however, facing the window making it very difficult to see other passengers when seated.
- Seat space: having the bulkhead in front of them and not another seat, means that the two First Class Suite passengers have more space to themselves.
- IFE screen size: First Class suites have a 20″ screen while Business Class seats have a smaller 17.3″ screen. All IFE screens onboard are touchscreen and 4K, that includes those fitted in Economy Class.
Both First Class and Business seats are fully lie-flat capable, with a 22.5″ width. Additionally free high-speed WiFi is complimentary for First and Business class travelers.

What Do The 144 Economy Seats Offer?
Being totally fair and honest, we can’t pretend that traveling economy is the same on a narrow body as it is on a wide body aircraft. It simply isn’t. A wide body ensures greater comfort, there’s no getting around that. Cabins are roomier there’s more space to roam and move around and so on.
However, as far as single aisle long haul aircraft go, the Etihad Airbus A321LR has got to rank pretty high. It features at every seat:
- 13.3″ 4K IFE screen
- USB-C and USB-A charging ports
- 30″ of seat pitch on standard Economy Class seats
- 34″ of seat pitch on extra legroom Economy Class seats (first 2 rows)
- 5″ of seat recline
On top of that WiFi passes are available for purchase with texting packages included for all Etihad Members.
Where Does The A321LR Fly?
As happens in every airline with every aircraft, they can be used on any route that needs the specific capacity it offers. Therefore you might occasionally spot an A321LR on unusual routes.
However, the most common routes you can find the A321LR on are those from Abu Dhabi to:

Why The A321LR is Such an Important Asset for Etihad
The A321LR is a game changer for Etihad and its operations. The aircraft has enabled the airline to launch and operate flights to secondary or lower demand destinations, while still making a profit. Flights like the recently announced one to Luxembourg would never had been possible if not for the A321LR.
The aircraft also represents a strategic tool which allows Etihad to differentiate its strategy from fellow UAE airline Emirates. By serving flights to secondary airports it cuts out the nuisance of connecting onto last mile regional flights or trains at the end of a long journey. A key selling point Etihad is leveraging and will continue to do more of as the A321LR fleet grows.
