2026 will be a pivotal year for Alaska Air Group, with Hawaiian Airlines’ entry into the oneworld alliance standing out as one of its most significant developments. Alaska Airlines has been a member of the oneworld alliance for several years. Aligning Hawaiian Airlines with the same alliance was therefore a necessary step in integrating the two carriers under a single operating strategy.

A $600 Million Plan That Goes Beyond Airports and Aircraft
Fully integrating into Alaska Air Group operations requires Hawaiian Airlines to align with the group’s long-term strategy, particularly in long-haul and transpacific markets.
That plan involves making the group a force on long haul flights from and to the US. That goal comes with a whole new set of necessities in terms of infrastructure and tech to create a passenger experience that holds up against and is competitive with what other major carriers offer.
To achieve that a $600 million plan is now being implemented at Honolulu airport, in the airline’s fleet and its digital channels.
Major Airport Upgrades Across Hawaii’s Main Gateways
The group is investing to make of Hawaii’s airport system a gateway on par with others across the continental US.
Upgrades to the current airport infrastructure will break ground in 2026 with completion scheduled in 2028.
Hawaiian Airlines will be renovating gates at Honolulu, Lihu’e, Kahului, Kona and Hilo. Upgrades will include larger spaces, better seating and amenities, and power charging stations.
Additionally, Honolulu International Airport in the Mauka Concourse in Terminal 1 will welcome a brand new 10,600 square foot premium lounge.
New App, New Systems – and Why Timing Matters
While it may not be the first thing passengers think about, a modern and well designed app is something the American public has come to expect in its air travel experience. The new app will launch in spring, with the airline entering oneworld. The new Hawaiian Airlines app should make many aspects of travel management easier and more intuitive.
Widebody A330 Upgrades Signal a Shift Upmarket
The last piece of this complex puzzle is the modernization of Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330 fleet. The plan, for the time being, is to enhance the Hawaiian Airlines A330 cabin interiors starting in 2028. So not something coming immediately to the airline’s daily operations. Additionally there will be more A330s entering the fleet which the Alaska Air Group will be taking in leasing agreements. Finally, Starlink high-speed internet will also become part the onboard experience.
What Travelers Will Actually Notice After April
There will be two major changes to the passenger experience starting in April 2026. The most immediate impact of Hawaiian Airlines joining oneworld will be access to networks operated by other member airlines.
Most importantly, eligible passengers will gain access to premium lounges around the world. American Airlines, Qantas, JAL, Cathay Pacific, and the shared oneworld lounge at Seoul Incheon will become accessible to premium cabin and elite Hawaiian frequent flyers.
