It wasn't that long ago, early February 2025, when Lufthansa and ITA Airways broke the news we had been expecting about the Italian carrier next steps to further integrate into the LH Group. Among the first steps were the two that took effect yesterday that I'll talk about in this post.
ITA Airways' Relocation in Munich and Frankfurt Airports – Under One Roof with Lufthansa
March 30th, 2025, is the day ITA Airways takes its first step away from SkyTeam to move closer to Star Alliance and the Lufthansa Group. Until now it had happened only with words but now, we have something more substantial to mark this shift.

ITA Airways has relocated its operations in both Frankfurt and Munich airports, Lufthansa's main operational hubs. The move will allow passengers traveling on combined itineraries to have more convenient transfers at the airports and allow the Italian flag carrier to work shoulder to shoulder with Lufthansa and the other airlines of the LH Group (SWISS, Brussels Airlines and Austrian Airlines).
Specifically ITA Airways has moved:
- In Frankfurt: from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1
- In Munich: from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2
Also beyond Frankfurt and Munich, ITA Airways has relocated its check-in desks in many destinations it jointly serves with Lufthansa.
This move is an important milestone in the integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group. Our customers will be able to transfer faster and more comfortably thanks to shorter distances and will have more comfort throughout their entire journey.

Mutual Lounge Access for Lufthansa and ITA Airways Frequent Flyers
Another major change that took effect on March 30th, 2025, is the fact that the airlines' lounges are now mutually open. What that means is that Volare frequent flyers can access Lufthansa lounges worldwide and inversly Miles&More frequent flyers can access ITA Airways lounges. Summed those are approximately 130 lounges, albeit mostly put on the table by Lufthansa.

Next on The ITA and Lufthansa Agenda?
The next steps involve preparing ITA Airways' departure from SkyTeam by the end of 2025. The Italian carrier will be completely integrated with Lufthansa's operations once it enters Star Alliance in 2026, effectively filling the void created by SAS jumping ship and making the opposite transition.
I have stated multiple times that, although not mentioned yet, it is likely that we'll have some news regarding ITA's Volare frequent flyer program by the end of the year. I think Volare will cease to exist, and that ITA will join the other airlines of the group in Miles&More by early 2026.
