Planning a Trip To Greenland? - More Flights Available Than Ever Before

Well I must admit, maybe the title might be a little misleading. Reaching Greenland was and still is quite complicated and a journey. What has changed is that, while before we had just one option, Air Greenland, now we have some alternatives. Two other airlines will be commencing flights to Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, in 2025.

SAS Makes a Return in Nuuk and Greenland After Over 20 Years of Absence

Flights to Greenland will be picking up in volume in 2025, however, the main European gateway to the island will not change. Copenhagen is and will remain the go to airport to transit via in order to reach Greenland, even with the new flight I’m covering today.

Alongside the standing Air Greenland service there will soon be another flight connecting Nuuk to Copenhagen. The airlines starting this new service is SAS, which makes a return to the territory following a over 20 year absence. The new SAS flight to Greenland will operate 3x weekly with flights available every:

  • Monday
  • Wednesday
  • Friday

Flight number will be SK1294 and will cover the route for the first time on June 27th 2025, just a few days after United Airlines also launches its flight to Nuuk from Newark.

The main difference between Air Greenland and SAS’s service is the aircraft the airlines will be using on the route. Air Greenland will be using its flagship aircraft, the Airbus A330-800, while SAS will be using the much smaller and nimble A320neo. The Scandinavian Airlines A320neo can seat, on a fully loaded cabin up to 180 passengers. There is no real business class on these planes as it is set up in the European fashion of having the central seat blocked off depending on the number of passengers booked.

More Flights To Nuuk Than Ever Before

Although there will only still be 10 weekly flights between Europe and Greenland, that is the largest number we’ve ever seen. That is on top of the first direct flight to the US operated by United Airlines. This might be the start of something for Greenland as I’m sure tourists will start to visit more frequently the region with more flights now available.

Looking at fare prices from Europe to Greenland, they’re not that bad at all. For a direct non-stop flight from Copenhagen to Nuuk we’re looking at a 700 Euro fare cost. I’m sure thought that accommodation and food will be quite pricy once landed in Nuuk.
