With this post we’ll be looking at a route which is somewhat off the beaten path. Just a few months after announcing and commencing flights between Sydney and Rarotonga in the Cook Islands Jetstar has already announced a route power up. So let’s take a look at how things have been going on the route and how they will pan out in the coming months.
How’s The Sydney Cook Islands Flight Gone So Far?
From what the Qantas group airline has announced in its press release things have been going quite well on this new route. Over the first 4 months of activity JQ states that they have carried on the route over 8,000 passengers. That translates to roughly just over 2,000 passengers per month on a flight that has approximately 3,200 available seats every 30 days.
However those figures are to be taken with a pinch of salt as they were achieved during the winter months. There will definitely be higher demand during the summer season with the airline anticipating this with a third weekly flight kicking off on November.

An Extra Jetstar Flight Coming in 2024
The fact that the airline is happy with how the Sydney to Rarotonga flight is performing is reflected by the decision to add extra capacity on the route in the coming year. Jetstar will be adding an extra weekly flight from Sydney to the Cook Islands. This addition will bring the weekly flights from 3 to 4, with over 800 weekly seats available on the route.
The extra flight will operate on Wednesdays. Therefore flight JQ141 from Sydney to the Cook Islands starting March 27th 2024 will operate every:
- Tuesday
- Wednesday
- Thursday
- Sunday
The extra flight is strategically starting to operate before the busy easter holidays in Australia.
What Was the Sydney to Cook Island Flight Schedule Again?
| Flight Number | Departure Airport | Airport Code | Departure Time | Arrival Airport | Airport Code | Arrival Time | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JQ141 | Sydney | SYD | 21:30 | Raratonga | RAR | 06:35+1 | |
| JQ142 | Raratonga | RAR | 09:00 | Sydney | SYD | 13:10 |
What is quite interesting about this flight’s schedule is that the arrival time is early in the morning of departure. This is the case as the flight on its path from Sydney to Rarotonga crosses the international date line.

What Plane is Jetstar Using on Flight JQ141?
Jetstar uses its longest range narrow body plane on this route, the A321neo LR. Why you might ask? Simply because this is a really long flight with travel times exceeding 6 hours.
The Jetstar A321neo are set up with one only travel class (Economy) with a maximum capacity of 232 passengers.
A Long Flight on Dense Configuration
Before booking think carefully about the flight time and aircraft configuration. This is a very long flight on a plane that has a very dense configuration. Two ingredients that added up can make a flight quite uncomfortable. If the prive balances out this two factors then go straight ahead, but it can be an uncomfortable trip.
