The Dreamliners On Route AC55
The fact that Vancouver to Sapporo flights are primarily leisure focused and potentially a niche service, makes them an ideal fit for the Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
Air Canada owns the smaller 787-8 and the mid-sized 787-9, therefore having the flexibility to use one variant or the other depending on expected passenger volumes.
The smaller 787-8 seats approximately 250 passengers while the larger 787-9 can seat up to 298 on a fully booked cabin.
Who’s This New Flight to Japan For?
The new flight will link two winter sports destinations. Both Sapporo and Vancouver have hosted the Winter Olympics in the past.
Air Canada’s new AC55 flight from Vancouver to Sapporo seems very clearly tailored to winter sports enthusiasts and anyone looking for a winter/snow holiday.
That is reinforced as the airline states in its press release that ski bags and equipment are included as part of regular checked bag allowances.
Sapporo, Air Canada’s Fourth Flight to Japan from Vancouver
Vancouver (YVR), because of its geographical position has become Air Canada’s trans-pacific hub serving many major cities in Asia.
Flight AC55 to Sapporo Chitose Hokkaido Airport (CTS) will become the airline’s fourth to Japan from Vancouver. This stacks on top of existing services to:
- Tokyo Haneda (HND) – Year-round
- Tokyo Narita (NRT) – Year-round
- Osaka Kansai (KIX) – Summer seasonal

Why This Route Matters for Passengers
Beyond the ski slopes, this route offers a significant logistical advantage. Currently, reaching Sapporo requires a connection in Tokyo (Narita or Haneda) or elsewhere in Asia. Air Canada claims this direct service saves more than two hours of travel time each way compared to connecting flights.
For Aeroplan members, this opens up a new “Sweet Spot” for redemption. Finding partner availability on ANA to Sapporo can be difficult during peak winter season. Having direct Air Canada metal availability, albeit likely at dynamic pricing, provides a critical new option for reaching Hokkaido’s powder.
This is the only non-stop service linking Sapporo to North America, giving Air Canada a temporary monopoly on this specific trans-pacific leisure market.
