Tourism data is showing the US taking a hit in terms of visitors in 2025. There have been many factors that have brought this situation on. However the hope is for a brighter 2026, particularly as the US gears up to host, jointly with Mexico, one of the most important sporting events on the planet, the FIFA World Cup. All US-based carriers are eager to cash in on this massive opportunity and among them is American Airlines which has just announced an international network power up for 2026 with 5 new routes and an update on two existing services.

American Airlines New Central European Routes: Philadelphia to Prague and Budapest 2026
Let’s kick things off from the US northeast and then move further south. American Airlines, more so after covid, has suffered from having a smaller presence and market share on international services. All while demand for international travel from the US, specifically transatlantic services, was booming. Now it’s a game of catch up for American Airlines.
As the airline rebuilds its modernized long haul fleet it is launching more routes to Europe, for a very good reason, looking at 2026. The US will jointly host, with Mexico, the Football World Cup in June and July 2026. Europeans are among the most passionate followers of the sport and will certainly make their way in numbers to the host cities.
Among them is Philadelphia, which will have two brand new routes to central Europe launching in the new year just ahead of the big event.

American Airlines Philadelphia to Prague Flights: Summer Seasonal Service Details
First of the two services is Philadelphia to Prague. This new American Airlines service will be a seasonal one, which may or may not be confirmed for the following year. That all depends, in my opinion, on outbound traffic from the US bound for Europe more than the other way around. Inbound traffic to the US will most likely be driven by the world cup while outbound traffic will be leisure traffic which could be replicated in 2027 too.
American Airlines’ Only US-Budapest Nonstop Service Launches May 2026
Second route from Philadelphia will be American Airlines’ one to Budapest, Hungary. This is a totally new addition to AA’s route network. The first ever nonstop service from the US to the capital of Hungary. Hungary is a rapidly growing and developing economy in the European area as its lower labour costs have attracted manufacturing industry. The country, its capital Budapest in particular, remain one of the most beautiful and sought after tourist destinations in Europe. This route too, as Prague, will be a summer seasonal service launching just ahead of the World Cup.

When Do American Airlines Philadelphia European Routes Start?
So when will these two new services from American Airlines’ base of Philadelphia launch?
| Route | Frequency | Launch Date |
|---|---|---|
| Philadelphia-Prague | Daily | May 21, 2026 |
| Philadelphia-Budapest | Daily | May 21, 2026 |
Both routes will be served by the carrier’s smallest long range capable aircraft, the Boeing 787-8. An aircraft that is the backbone of American Airline’s operations on transatlantic routes to most destination.
American Airlines Enhanced European Network: New Athens, Milan, and Zurich Routes 2026
Then there’s the rest of the American Airlines’ 2026 European route network expansion. These remaining ones involve the airline’s southern hubs of Dallas and Miami with flights to highly requested destinations in Italy, Greece and Switzerland. A series of enhancements the American Airlines’ route network will greatly benefit from.

American Airlines Miami to Milan Flights: Year-Round Service Starting March 2026
I might be biased in my opinion, as an Italian currently based in Italy, but not having a flight to Italy’s financial and fashion capital from its southern hub in Miami can be seen as a significant void in American Airlines’ network.
A void which won’t exist for all that much longer. The Texas-based airline will launch a year round daily service from Miami International Airport to Milan Malpensa International Airport on March 29th 2026. Initially, the new Miami to Milan flight too will be aboard one of AA’s Boeing 787-8s
American Airlines Dallas-Fort Worth to Athens and Zurich Summer 2026
With the Dallas to Athens flight we’re looking once again at a seasonal service. This too will be aboard one of the many AA Boeing 787-8s, but it’ll be a daily service. Lastly there’s the DFW to Zurich flight which is not only a seasonal service but also very limited in operational time during the year. The flight is clearly tailored to sports fans traveling for the World Cup, as it launches on May 21st and ceases on August 4th 2026, aboard a Boeing 777-200.
American Airlines Boeing 787-8 Cabin Configuration
As most of the new American Airlines flights to Europe are aboard the carrier’s Boeing 787-8 it’s worth taking a few moments to go over what this aircraft offers.
In terms of cabin configuration the American Airline Boeing 787-8 all come with:
| Class | Seats |
|---|---|
| Business | 20 |
| Premium Economy | 28 |
| Economy | 186 |
However there are two different Business Class layouts. One features the Collins Aerospace Super Diamond seat while the other with the Safran bespoke Concept D seat. In my mind the Super Diamond is the seat I’d prefer every day of the week. Concept D provides less privacy and can have you looking straight at some stranger creating an awkward feeling.

American Airlines Expanded South American and Asian Service 2026
There’s then an update worth mentioning for two more American Airlines services, those to:
- Buenos Aires
- Tokyo Haneda
Dallas to Buenos Aires flight is a seasonal one and was originally set to cease operations on May 21st 2026. However the decision has been taken to extend it through August 4, 2026. This is also a World Cup focused operational update.
Finally there’s an aircraft change which will involve American Airline’s flights from Dallas and Los Angeles to Tokyo Haneda. AA will be introducing on these flights its more premium heavy configured Boeing 777s. This will allow the American carrier to deploy 45% more Business class capacity than in 2025.
