American Airlines One Step Closer to Launching San Antonio to Washington D.C. Flights

American Airlines closer to launch San Antonio Washington flights

American Airlines among the big 3 US carriers has always boasted one of the strongest domestic route networks, almost taking it to an extreme. In the wake of 2020 the airline retired much of its aging long haul fleet making a gamble that the domestic market would be the one to drive recovery. However that proved not the case. Airlines with more capacity on long-haul, particularly transatlantic routes where the ones bringing in the big bucks, namely Delta and United. While it has been making progress on its long haul operations the airline is also looking to expand its domestic routes.

American Airlines Gets Approval to Start San Antonio to Washington Flights

It’s only the first step but an important one to get the route off the ground. American Airlines got tentative approval to start flying round trips, non-stop, between San Antonio and Washington D.C.. We still have no details whatsoever regarding this possibile new service apart from the route itself. Therefore, we are still in the early stages of planning this new service.

If it actually does take off the new service will connect San Antonio airport with Washington D.C.’s Ronald Reagan airport (DCA). That is the airport closer to downtown D.C. for those less accustomed to the area, not Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). Also thinking about the two airports involved and the possible traffic on the route it is likely that the plane could be a smaller regional jet or at the most one of the airlines smallest single aisle narrow bodies.

Possibly Undermining United’s Monopoly on the Route

Currently the only option to fly non-stop between San Antonio and Washington D.C. is United Airlines with its 3 daily flights. If American Airlines’ new service takes off it will not only offer an alternative for passengers but also possibly create a more convenient one. Simply because currently United operates all of its flights to Washington Dulles which implicates an airport to city transfer which can prove time consuming. As mentioned above, American Airlines intends instead to operate from the much more central Reagan International Airport. All we can do now is wait for future announcements regarding this new American Airlines San Antonio to Washington flight.
