Etihad has just announced one of its most interesting destinations in Europe. On October 29th 2026 Etihad will commence flights to Luxembourg International Airport from Abu Dhabi under flight number EY51/EY52. An intriguing choice for more than one reason. Let’s cover the key facts of the new Etihad flight to Europe before digging deeper into the details.
- Start date: October 29th 2026
- Frequency: Mon/Thu/Sat (3 weekly)
- Aircraft: A321LR
- Product: 3-class, First Suites, lie-flat Business
- Flights/times: EY51 / EY52 with listed timings
Etihad: The First Middle Eastern Carrier to Fly to Luxembourg
The main aspect to make of Etihad’s new EY51 flight from Abu Dhabi to Luxembourg a unique one is that this will be the first time for a middle eastern carrier flying there. No other carrier from the region has ever flown to the country.
That is mainly down to aircraft economics limitations, that have been recently overcome with the new generation long haul capable, highly efficient, narrow body planes.
Despite Etihad being the first middle eastern carrier to fly to Luxembourg there is already another airline operating flights to the UAE. That is the national carrier of Luxembourg Luxair.
Shortly About Luxair’s “Other” Luxembourg to UAE flight
The tiny airline operates a twice weekly service from Luxembourg, not to Abu Dhabi but, to Dubai. The flight number is LG9009 and it is also a unique service as will Etihad’s be. Luxair flies the route on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 and serves not DXB airport but DWC. That’s Dubai world central, the airport the hosts the airshow and is currently under construction.

EY51 Abu Dhabi Made Possible By The New Etihad A321LR
Contrary to what you might think Luxembourg airport is not small. The airport is suited for larger aircraft takeoffs and landings. To give you some color on that, Boeing 747s regularly fly from and to Luxembourg airport (LUX).
LUX is one of the most relevant air freight hubs in Europe. Yes you read that right. Passenger operations account for only a fraction of the airport’s income. Most of its income is generated by cargo operations, with CargoLux leading the way in terms of flight volumes.
It does remain a tiny airport in its passenger operations with a short list of airlines regularly operating flights. Etihad is about to become one of the airlines.

The hurdle for long haul flights to Luxembourg is making the economics work. Demand is limited to what Luxembourg and the surrounding region can support, which isn’t much.
Etihad’s way around this is using the newest addition to its fleet, the A321LR. The A321LR is Etihad’s first single aisle aircraft specifically set up for long haul operations on limited demand sectors exactly like EY51/EY52 Abu Dhabi to Luxembourg.
Its smaller size and high fuel efficiency allows to reach the flight breakeven point with more ease paving the way for flights of this type to flourish.

Etihad’s Unique A321LR 3-Class Configuration
I’ve written a full post on the unique setup Etihad has chosen for its fleet of A321LRs, however, allow me to summarize it for you so that you can get a grip on what makes this plane unique on the inside.
The aircraft features a 3-class configuration, with one of them being first class. That is not only unique, it is right out rare. Etihad’s A321LR features:
- 2 First Class Seats – in a 1-1 layout
- 14 Business Class Seats – in a 1-1 layout
- 144 Economy Class Seats – in a 3-3 layout
Now, it must be stated that the seat itself doesn’t differ all that much between first class and business class, with the privacy door and more space being the differentiating factors. The lie flat capable seat itself is based on the same Stelia Opera SA design.
Service, on the other hand, is where the full difference is to be noticed and, if you’re lucky enough to travel first, enjoyed.
Down to EY51/EY52 Flight Timings and Frequency
Come October 29th 2026, when Etihad will commence serving the route, here’s how timings will work:
| Flight | From | To | Departs | Arrives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EY51 | Abu Dhabi (AUH) | Luxembourg (LUX) | 02:45 | 6:55 |
| EY52 | Luxembourg (LUX) | Abu Dhabi (AUH) | 09:35 | 19:05 |
Frequency will be three times per week, with flights operating every:
- Monday
- Thursday
- Saturday
Further Confirmation of Etihad Differentiating From Emirates Strategy
EY51/EY52 flight from Abu Dhabi to Luxembourg is yet another clue of how Etihad is working to differentiate itself from Emirates and avoid competing on every route with the much larger fellow-UAE airline.
Emirates can count on a massive operational scale which Etihad can’t match. So instead of going head to head on every route, EY (Etihad) is differentiating from Emirates. As A321LR aircraft numbers grow this has become more the case, with more routes to limited demand long haul destinations propping up.
Etihad will still operate flights to the major worldwide cities, however it will then provide flight options to secondary airports cutting out the need to transit on last mile regional flights that can easily become a nuisance.
