Finnair Expands Thailand Flights for Winter 2026

Finnair hasn’t had it easy in the past 5 years. The airline used to market itself as serving the shortcut routes to Asia. The key piece to that business model went missing when Russia closed its airspace to all European carriers. Since then finding a new core business has been the name of the game, and it hasn’t been an easy one. However, one ground where the playing field has remained level is on flights to leisure destinations in southeast Asia. With the 2025 winter season still to kick into full swing, the airline is already planning on doubling down on Thailand flights in one year’s time.

Record 25 Weekly Flights Planned for Winter 2026

Thailand is one of the prime leisure destinations for Europeans during the winter months. Scan all major carriers’ winter schedule in the region and the odds of finding at least one flight to Thailand in it are extremely high.

With this year’s (2025) winter season still to kick into top gear, Finnair is already looking at expanding its operations to Thailand for 2026.

Winter 2026 will see Finnair operate a record 25 weekly flights from its base in Helsinki international airport. That will position the airport and the airline as a prime gateway for the larger Scandinavian region for travel towards holiday hotspots in Thailand.

Up to Three Daily Flights to Bangkok

The currently most served destination in Thailand for Finnair is Bangkok and that dominant position will be further strengthened with the 2026 winter schedule amendments.

Weekly flights will increase current level at 18 to 22 starting late October 2026. That in turn means that Finnair flights to Bangkok will have up to a 3x daily frequency during peak demand period.

The new additional Finnair flight to Bangkok is expected to arrive in the afternoon of the same day.

Direct Flights to Krabi Return After Six Years

2026 will also see a return to the Finnair Thai route network. The Finnish airline will resume flights to Krabi, Thailand. Flights were suspended at the end of the 2019 winter season and never reinstated. 2026 will be the first time in 6 years for Finnair operating flights from Helsinki to Krabi.

Finnair’s Full Thailand Schedule for Winter 2026

Finnair will have a very busy schedule of flights from Helsinki to Thailand come winter 2026. The airline will be operating flights to 3 destinations in the country between October 25th 2026 and March 27th 2027.

Finnair’s Thai destinations will include:

  • Krabi – returning after 6 years of absence
  • Bangkok – up to 3 daily flights
  • Phuket – 5 times per week

What This Expansion Means for Finnair’s Long-Haul Strategy

The decision to expand operations to Thailand in 2026 is driven by the strong demand the airline has had for flights so far this year and the fact that the playing field is level on this route with its European competitors.

Finnair doesn’t have a strong historical presence in the North American market and now faces massive hurdles in being competitive on routes to east Asia.

On flights to Thailand, which primarily target the leisure segment, it has no headwinds. Russian airspace closure only impacts the flight paths minimally and being the direct option plays in its favor when competing with other carriers.

Therefore having found a market that works well it makes sense for the airline to increase its flight frequencies to Thailand.

“Thailand is undoubtedly one of our most popular long-haul winter destinations. Up to three daily flights to Bangkok meet the ever-growing demand, and the capacity is significant even by European standards. Krabi offers an alternative for Phuket for those looking for a quieter beach holiday,”
Perttu Jolma, Finnair’s Vice President of Network management
