Iberia A321XLR Has a New Route – Madrid to Washington DC IB361

Iberia was the first airline to receive the game-changer Airbus A321XLR. The Spanish flag carrier wasn’t even supposed to be the first carrier to get the aircraft, but internal disagreements between Aer Lingus pilots and IAG management pushed things to pan out this way. Since its arrival the A321XLR has become an integral part of Iberia’s transatlantic operations. Now all the more with a new route to the US from the airline’s main hub.

Iberia’s Second A321XLR Flight to The US: IB361 Madrid to Washington

Iberia made front page news a few months back, in late 2024, when it was the first airline to receive an A321XLR. The Spanish flag carrier was the launch customer for the revolutionary single-aisle aircraft which has enabled many long and thin routes.

Among these is the first route the airline has deployed its newest aircraft on, Madrid to Boston, with now a second also running from a few days. It isn’t exactly a new service per-se, as Iberia already served the Madrid to Washington-Dulles as a seasonal route up to 2024. However, the introduction of the A321XLR completely changes the entire economics.

A smaller aircraft, such as the Iberia A321XLR, which is inherently easier to fill enables to have more frequencies, therefore enhancing passenger travel flexibility.

Iberia Flight IB361: Frequencies and Schedule

Having the A321XLR on the route will have Iberia operate IB361 flight from Madrid to Washington-Dulles will have a varying frequency model. What I mean by that is:

• From April to August there will be 6 weekly flights, with Mondays being the day off.
• In September and October the service ups to a daily frequency.

Also IB361 flight is now a year-round service in the Iberia schedule and no longer a seasonal connection. The fact the A321XLR is the aircraft for the route has a great influence on the decision to invest on the Madrid to Washington route as it brings a much bigger comfort buffer in terms of operating margins.

As for the schedule for the non-stop direct flight from Madrid to Washington D.C.:

• IB361: Departs Madrid (MAD) at 11:50, arriving in Washington D.C. (IAD) at 15:00.
• IB362: Departs Washington D.C. (IAD) at 16:35, arriving in Madrid (MAD) at 06:25 the next morning.

The Very Special Iberia A321XLR – The Aircraft of Choice for Flight IB361

The A321XLR is the reason IB361 is such an interesting service. The extra long range version of the A321 is reshaping the way many flights are operated, particularly across the Atlantic.

The aircraft being a single aisle plane is not the most spacious or comfortable from a passenger’s and cabin crew’s perspective, but it is a real game changer for airlines.

Iberia has opted to fit its A321XLR with a 2 class cabin configuration which in the premium cabin includes seats that become lie-flat beds. There are seven rows of Business Class with the Thompson Aero Vantage Solo seats in a 1-1 layout, making a total of 14. They are oriented at an angle towards the center of the aircraft in order to take up less space and fit a full 7 rows.

Economy is in the standard 3-3 layout with 168 Recaro R3 seats. It’s difficult to give you a precise piece of data in regards to the spaciousness of the seat as there is a different seat pitch among different sections of the economy class cabin. Each seat though has its personal IFE screen with a generous width of 12 inches.
