We’ve known for some time already that Singapore Airlines would be the first major carrier to operate flights to Sydney’s new airport. Singapore Airlines will launch flight SQ201 to Western Sydney Airport (WSI) starting November 23rd 2026.

Singapore Airlines was one of the first carriers to pounce on the possibility of operating flights to Western Sydney Airport (WSI).

Operating flights to this new airfield in the city of Sydney comes with some significant benefits for a carrier such as Singapore Airlines. We will touch on those later on in the post, but first let’s look at what the schedule of the flight is going to look like and which aircraft type is going to be used.

The aircraft type of choice will be an Airbus A350-900, which is the backbone of many of Singapore Airlines’ medium and long-haul operations.

In its medium-haul configuration, which will be used for this flight to Western Sydney Airport, Singapore Airlines sets up its A350-900s with a two-class configuration featuring:

  • 40 business class seats
  • 263 economy class seats

The flight will be daily service and will commence operations from November 23rd, 2026.

A massive leap forward for Sydney as a whole

One of the biggest issues Sydney has faced for decades has been the shutdown of the airport every night at 11 pm. A curfew bans flights to land or depart between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. every day.

However, Western Sydney Airport will have no curfew applied and will be allowed to operate 24/7, 365 days per year. That translates to a massive capacity potential (all the more when at a later stage the airport will be completed with both of its runways) and the capability of becoming a true logistics hub for the entire Sydney region.

Singapore Airlines, as a carrier that focuses on passenger operations but just as much on cargo and freight operations, was one of the first to show interest in operating flights to this new airport.

SQ202 is a flight that would never have been able to operate out of Sydney, Kingsford Smith Airport. Its departure out of Sydney at 11:55 p.m. would have put it in the curfew zone, not allowing it to take off out of Sydney Kingsford Smith.

That 11:55 p.m. departure time is of key importance to Singapore Airlines, as it allows passengers from this flight to connect onto the morning bank out of Singapore Changi Airport onto flights to Europe, India, and Southeast Asia.

Singapore Airlines tapping into one of the fastest-growing population areas in Australia

While SQ201 increases capacity for Singapore Airlines on flights from Singapore to Sydney, it is also tapping into one of the fastest-growing population regions in Australia.

Western Sydney has consistently grown over the past years as a population and economic centre. The sheer size of Sydney means that flying into Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport and getting Western Sydney would imply a trip lasting over an hour.

Flying into WSI cuts down the need for this travel for the population living in Western districts, while also offering a second option of travel to Sydney. Therefore, flying to WSI is more advantageous for people living in this catchment area of the airport, as there will be no train connection to the CBD or downtown Sydney for the first five months. The metro opening has been delayed until April 2027.

Also, Singapore Airlines will have a first-mover advantage. Other major carriers that serve Sydney, such as Emirates and Qatar Airways, still haven’t moved at the moment to serve Western Sydney Airport so far.
