Southwest Airlines has changed a lot in the past year. The airline has shifted away from some of its core values in the pursuit of extracting more revenue and beefing up its profits. That meant moving away from bags travel free approach and taking on assigned seating with premium options. Along with that deep transformation, Southwest has been exploring other route opportunities to enhance its network and drive growth. The newest frontier for the airline is Alaska.

A Major Milestone for Southwest Airlines
This is a first time for Southwest Airlines, never had the Texas-based airline flown to Alaska. That is soon to change, as the carrier prepares to launch its first services to the northern-most state.
What makes this a major milestone for Southwest’s history is that Alaska will represent the 43rd US state it serves. It is also the missing link to the other state outside of the continental US, after Hawaii.

Why Anchorage Makes Sense
There is sustained travel and trade demand between the continental US and Alaska that Southwest can tap into. During the summer months many tourists seek to visit the northern state which makes for a great opportunity for the airline. During the winter months trade related demand remains strong enough to sustain flights. Additionally, Southwest can leverage one of the most extensive domestic networks in the US allowing passengers to travel from and to Anchorage from an endless list of destinations.

New Service Launch Timeline
The new services to Anchorage will become part of the Southwest network in early 2026. However, there are a few blanks yet to be filled about the carrier flying to Anchorage.
For instance, no clear indication on which will be the first flight Southwest will operate to Anchorage, Alaska. We’ll have to wait longer to know which city will first be linked to Anchorage by Southwest. Therefore we don’t either have a clear reference on the date for the new flights to start.
Information about the flights, destination and schedule, should be released some time later this month. Do expect the launch to come just ahead of the summer high season.
Enhanced Onboard Experience
The new Southwest flights to Anchorage in 2026 will come with planes featuring all the newly updated and redesigned passenger experience. That among other things includes:
- New cabin interiors with assigned and premium seating
- Free Wi-Fi for Rapid Rewards members via T-Mobile partnership
- Power outlets and USB-C on all Boeing 737-8 aircraft
