Thai Airways makes a return on the Italian aviation market. Flights operated by the Thai national carrier has come to a halt in the wake of the 2020 events. Prior to then the airline used to fly two daily flights from its base in Bangkok Suvarnabhumi international airport to Italy. Those were TG940 to Milan Malpensa and TG945 to Rome Fiumicino. Still no news on the Rome flight, however, Thai Airways is finally resuming flights to Milan Malpensa international airport.
Thai Airways Resumes Bangkok Milan TG940 Flight
I personally flew more in more than one occasion with Thai Airways from Italy to Bangkok, on flight TG945 from Rome though. The Thai airline was often a particularly good option for us to fly down to Australia to visit family via Bangkok. Enough about me, back to the main story.
Flight TG940 Milan Malpensa to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi will be, from the get-go, a daily service. This testifies how the carrier believes it can turn this route into a money maker rapidly.
| Flight Number | Departure Airport | Airport Code | Departure Time | Arrival Airport | Airport Code | Arrival Time | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TG940 | Bangkok | BKK | 00:40 | Milan Malpensa | MXP | 07:35 | |
| TG941 | Milan Malpensa | MXP | 14:05 | Bangkok | BKK | 05:55+1 |
As for the aircraft type that will be flying this returning Italian route for Thai Airways, that will be the Boeing 787-9. So, yes, a daily flight but without using the largest planes in the fleet. Thai set up its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with a 2-class configuration, featuring:
- 30 business class seats in a 1-2-1 layout
- 268 economy class seats in a classic 3-3-3 Dreamliner layout.

Why Is Italy an Attractive Market for an Airline like Thai?
Simply put, Italians love travelling to Thailand. Vast numbers of Italians every year visit Thailand’s beautiful beaches or the buzzling streets of Bangkok. It becomes an even more attractive destination in the wintertime when Italians are looking to enjoy some warm weather during the Christmas holidays. That is why Italy is a huge and important market for Thai Airways to tap into. However, this year during peak season the Asian carrier will have a new competitor on non-stop services. ITA Airways, just weeks ago announced it would also start flights from Italy to Bangkok.
