United Airlines Goes On Massive Network Expansion Spree

United Expands Network for Summer 2025 in Asia Europe and Africa_result

United Airlines is looking at many recent financial statements the number 2 airline in the United States. The airline is missing to bridge the gap with its peer Delta, some capacity and destinations both transatlantic and transpacific routes. That is exactly what the airline is looking to address in the coming summer season of 2025. United is in fact introducing a whopping 8 new destinations in both Asia and Europe, with some caveats though.

United Airlines Massive Network Expansion: What Are Its Nuances?

Although it is a very impressive network expansion there are a couple of things to be said about it. The only real long range additions to the network are those heading over to Europe. That is because the new destinations to be served in Asia will all depart and arrive at United’s Tokyo Narita hub.

United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8

For those of you less accustomed to United Airlines’ operations, the airline has fleet of Boeing 737s based in the Pacific between Guam and Tokyo Narita. They serve as an onward travel option for United passengers arriving at Tokyo’s second airport. They also operate one of the strangest United Airlines service, the Pacific Island Hopper. You can read more about it in this post.

The other interesting thing to point out is that United Airlines will become one of the few carriers, Air Greenland aside, to operate flights to Nuuk. Therefore, there will be a new way to get to Greenland, Copenhagen will no longer be the only option for tourists or residents to get in and out of there.

United’s New Services In Asia For Summer 2025

There will be 2 new flights for United from its Tokyo Narita hub in Japan. Those two new services will include flights to:

  • Ulaanbaatar, in Mongolia
  • Kaohsiung, in Taiwan

They will be medium-haul flights operated, as mentioned above by the airlines pacific fleet of Boeing 737s. They come configured in the airlines’ classic “domestic” 2 class configuration with a dedicated business class (first class for American) in a 2-2 layout and regular 3-3 setup economy class.

What is interesting of these services is that potentially you could make your way to these two destinations after having made all the trip on the island hopper and then travel onwards to Tokyo and finally to Mongolia or Taiwan.

Flights to Ulaanbaatar will start on May 1st 2025 and will cover the entirety of the summer season. On the other hand flights to Kaohsiung will start a little later with services taking off on July 11th 2025. The flight to Kaohsiung, Taiwan, will however be a year-round service.

Additional Flights to Europe and Africa Too

The biggest chunk of new flights being added to United Airlines summer 2025 schedule, however, involves Europe and Africa. Out of the 8 new flights announced 6 will involve these two regions. More specifically 5 involve Europe, 1 Africa. The list of new United Airlines destinations for summer 2025 include:

  • Dakar (Senegal) – 3x Weekly – Starting May 23rd
  • Nuuk (Greenland) – 2x Weekly – Starting June 14th
  • Faro (Portugal) – 4x Weekly – Starting May 16th
  • Madeira (Portugal) – 3x Weekly – Starting June 7th
  • Palermo (Italy) – 3x Weekly – Starting May 21st
  • Bilbao (Spain) – Starting May 31st

Alright, considering Nuuk Europe is a bit of stretch, however it is officially part of Denmark so, I suppose I can place it there. I’m dying to know which aircraft the airline will use for its flights to Greenland. Still no word on that, we’ll have to wait a little longer and see.
