United Airlines returns to Narita and sets up a Sapporo seasonal flight

United Airlines just recently put out a press release regarding a Trans-Pacific route expansion. Specifically, it is launching two new services (one of them a return) to Japan in the coming months. Specifically from Chicago here to Narita and San Francisco to Sapporo. Let’s dig into the details.

In this post:

United Airlines: A cramped Haneda forces the airline to Narita

United Airlines is spinning the story in its favor slightly. It is launching in October of 2026 a direct non-stop flight between Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Tokyo Narita (NRT) with a daily frequency. However, this is not an entirely new service.

United Airlines did use to serve Tokyo Narita but abandoned the more inconvenient airport to move to Haneda once slots became available.

Now it is returning to Tokyo Narita as Haneda has reached saturation and has no more space for new flights. In a way, United Airlines is being forced to fly to Narita if it wants to continue to grow its presence in the Japanese capital.

The issue with Narita is that it is very far out of the city center. You will have to take a pretty long train ride, with a range of an hour connection time between the airport itself and downtown Tokyo.

The daily Chicago O’Hare-Tokyo Narita flight will operate year-round starting October 24. The aircraft of choice will be a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. That means a marginal increase in capacity to Tokyo as United Airlines is deploying its smallest long-range capable aircraft.

Testing out Seasonal flights to Sapporo

The flights to Sapporo, on the other hand, which were announced in the same press release, feel more like an experimentation.

Also, as a passenger, it feels a little bit risky. Let me explain why. United Airlines is starting up this new service between San Francisco and Sapporo on December 11th, 2026, in the winter time.

The flight will only have three weekly services between SFO and Hokkaido. Additionally, Hokkaido is extremely notorious for its bad weather, which makes this flight exposed to cancellations or diversions.

If the flight is to be canceled, you will have to adjust your departure date by two or three days, which is significant considering that this is a leisure-oriented flight and generally you don’t have that much leeway in your holiday time.

That said, aside, the service will have a three times weekly frequency on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Additionally, it will start serving the route on December 11th, 2026, until March 2027.

Flight UA234 from San Francisco to Sapporo will be on the slightly larger 787-9.

Both flights are pending regulatory approval. Despite that they should go through, and there shouldn’t be any major issues, and we should see these flights operational on the forecasted launch date.
