Which is the best means of transportation to move around Italy? I’ll try and give you the answer for your needs, wether you’re on a budget or just looking for the most comfortable option.
If You’re On a Budget
If you’re on a budget, and not time sensitive, the bus will be your best option. Although I am not at all a fan, Flixbus offers some really low rates even for long journeys across Italy. Keep in mind that for many destinations there are many local transport companies which might also offer good deals. Just leave a comment if you need about the region you’re travelling to and I’ll try my best to get you the answer you need.
The Best Compromise
In my opinion the best way to get around Italy is the train. It’s the best compromise for price, speed and comfort. Italy’s main tourist cities (Rome, Florence, Bologna, Venice and Milan), along with many others, are covered by the high speed train network. There are two companies operating in Italy: the state owned Trenitalia and the private owned Italo Treno.
Italo offers 4 classes of service on its trains and generally offers the best rates on the high speed network. Trenitalia is often chosen by business travellers, it’s a bit more pricy on average but the cabins are a bit more comfortable and the mobile phone network coverage is a slightly better than on Italo.
Trenitalia also offers connections to Florence, Bologna and Venice directly from Rome Fiumicino international airport train station. Which makes it very convenient if you’re flying into Rome.
Just keep in mind the connections are limited and it is only from Fiumicino and not from Ciampino. If you’re traveling off the high
speed network expect the quality of the service to fall as well.
The Fastest and Most Expensive
The fastest way to move around of course is the plane. Prices are a bit higher but you’ll get around really fast. There are a number of airlines operating domestic flights in Italy: ITA Airways is the main full fare operators, however Ryanair and Volotea are low cost operators that also offer a limited array of domestic flights.
