Transport Options from Rome Airports

There are 4 ways that can get you from Rome’s two international airports to the city. In descending order of price:

  • NCC
  • Taxi
  • Train (only from Rome Fiumicino)
  • Bus

Train from Fiumicino to Rome

Fiumicino has a train station inside the airport, accessible via a covered walkway from both T1 and T3. It’s easy and convenient but not the cheapest option if in a group of 3 or more.

The train station in Rome Fiumicino Airport is served 3 train types:

  • Regionale
  • Leonardo Express
  • Freccarossa (high speed trains)

Your options to get into the city are the Regionale or Leonardo Express. Regionale trains will serve stations other than Roma Termini. For instance if you need to reach Roma Tiburtina, you’ll be looking at a regionale. Regionale will generally call at all stations so it is not a fast way to move.

Leonardo Express links Rome Fiumicino to Roma Termini. Termini is located right Rome’s center and is the station to go to if you are staying anywhere central. It runs all day, only stopping for a few hours at night, and tickets cost 15 Euro (17.50$ USD).

Regionale trains cost less than Leonardo Express, about 8 or 9 euro, but take up to 50 minutes to cover the distance between Rome Fiumicino and downtown.

NCC (Noleggio con Conducente)

NCC (Noleggio Con Conducente) are car rentals with driver (very similar to an Uber service). This kind of service is common in Italy. Italians are well trained to distinguish them from taxis, however, I do realize it can be confusing and misleading for tourists. These are not the official city taxis and tend to be pricy.

Usually NCC drivers will hang out around the arrivals area at the terminal looking for clients. So be careful before getting into a car, if it doesn’t have the taxi sign on the hood it’s an NCC. In that case make sure you have a clear deal on the price or gently decline their services.

NCCs and taxis, can be a convenient way to get to Rome’s city center if you’re in a group of 3 or more. A train fare will cost you almost 50 euro and that is more or less the cost of a cab ride. An NCC will cost you more than 50 Euro, keep that in mind.

⚠️ Tip: Only official white taxis with a “TAXI” sign and the Rome emblem offer the fixed fares. NCCs may charge much higher prices.

Taxi Service from Rome Airports

By taxi I mean Rome’s official taxis which have a fixed rate from and to Fiumicino and Ciampino airport. There are no surprises, and if they try to pull a quick one you should know that they don’t run on the meter on this route.

The price is fixed at 50€ each way from Rome Fiumicino to the city. Taxis from Rome Ciampino airport are also fixed, the fare is 31 Euro.

So if you’re going to split it with another 3 people this could be a fast way to get downtown at a reasonable price.

Bus Services from Rome Airports

The Bus: This is without any doubt the cheapest option but, in my opinion it’s also the most uncomfortable. The busses are often not extremely clean and at certain times traffic in Rome can become mayhem. The tickets are generally cheaper than the the train and can go as low as 5€. But unless you’re on a really tight budget I’d choose a different transport. You can look up the Terravision line for tickets.
