Airport hotels are often a much more expensive option than other accommodations, simply because they leverage, quite rightly, the unbeatable convenience of their location. It’s therefore worth weighing up whether the pros are enough to offset the con of a higher price. The airport hotel at the center of today’s article is the Hilton Rome Fiumicino. Here’s my experience and whether, in my opinion, it’s worth booking a room at this hotel.

Rooms at the Hilton Rome Fiumicino
Before telling you about my personal experience at this airport hotel, let me give you a bit of context. I stayed there with my wife and our 13-month-old son. Our flight was departing at 6 a.m. from Fiumicino, which meant leaving from home wasn’t a viable option. So, our reservation was for three – two adults and one infant – all in the same room.

With all that said, let’s talk about the stay itself. Check-in is available from 2:00 p.m., and we arrived around 4:00 p.m. by car. At check-in, we were asked whether we preferred a crib or a single bed for the baby. We chose the crib, so our room was changed to a double and the crib was brought up shortly after.

The rooms at the Hilton Rome Fiumicino have looked the same for decades, except for the bathrooms, which have been partially renovated. For example, the bathtub – since the days I regularly stayed here when flying with Emirates – has been updated. Apart from that, everything remains pretty much unchanged since the 1990s. There’s a minibar, but it’s left empty and turned off, so it’s not particularly useful.

The room includes complimentary bottled water, a selection of tea bags, instant coffee, a semi-professional hairdryer, soap, and shampoo.

Besides the bed, the room had an armchair, a desk chair, and a workspace (though not particularly comfortable for working on a laptop). Within 10 minutes of arriving, the crib was delivered, fully prepared with sheets and a pillow for our baby.

Dining Options During Your Stay
If you’re looking for a freshly cooked meal, the best option is probably the restaurant located on the hotel’s ground floor. It’s worth noting, however, that the menu offers simple dishes and, as you’d expect, prices are on the higher side. The food is good, but nothing extraordinary.

An alternative is to head to the terminal – just a 5-minute walk through the covered pedestrian passages that start right from the Hilton entrance. However, there isn’t much food selection before the gates at either Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. In recent years, an Eataly has opened in Terminal 3, but it’s nowhere near the quality level of those in major Italian cities. It’s a lighter version, offering only a few menu items for most of the day. Another, perhaps better, option is to grab a slice of pizza from the Bonci chain pizzeria next to Eataly. Beyond these two choices, you’ll only find a few cafés with sandwiches and small snacks.
That said, it’s rare for guests to spend more than one night in this hotel, so it’s not a big issue. We brought some ready-made food for our little one and fed him in the room.

Getting to the Terminals – Especially with Luggage
If you don’t have much luggage, the easiest option is to use the covered pedestrian walkways that lead from the Hilton to Terminals 1 and 3 at Rome Fiumicino. It’s not a long walk – around 5 to 10 minutes.
If, on the other hand, you’re traveling with several heavy bags, that walk might be a bit inconvenient. The Hilton Rome Fiumicino also provides a complimentary shuttle van that can take you directly to your departure terminal with all your bags. It’s a small but useful service that spares you from an unwanted pre-flight workout.

Is It Worth Staying at the Hilton Rome Fiumicino?
Here’s where some math comes in. As mentioned, prices for this hotel are far from low. A room for two people costs between €230 and €290 per night. For this stay, I used the American Express travel booking system, taking advantage of the annual €50 voucher provided. The full price would have been €270, reduced to €220 after applying the discount.
So yes, a night at the Hilton Rome Fiumicino can weigh heavily on your overall travel budget. If you’re trying to keep costs down, I’d recommend avoiding it and choosing hotels outside the airport that offer shuttle service instead.
However, if your only priority is convenience and you have an early morning flight (as was our case) then it’s absolutely worth it. Waking up just steps from the terminal in a spacious, comfortable room is, needless to say, incredibly convenient.
