Flights from Bangkok to Sydney are very often in high demand. Currently there are already 3 daily flights. A double daily service is operated by Thai Airways while the third daily flight is Qantas', although currently operated by Finnair. However, there is soon to be an additional fourth daily flight from a third airline on the Bangkok Sydney route. AirAsia X is all set to be the low-cost alternative on this lucrative route.
Going Head-to-Head with Qantas and Thai on Bangkok Sydney Route
AirAsia X has finally once again found its footing after the troublesome 2020 events. The airline has finally consolidated its operations in Bangkok's Don Mueang international airport enabling it to offer a more complete service offering. With all its flying out of Don Mueang it finally can offer transfers from its long-haul services, such as the new Sydney flight, to its short and medium-haul local flights.
The new service, AirAsia X flights XJ382 and XJ388, will commence operations on December 1st 2024. The timing is clearly intended to cater to holidaymakers during the Australian summer holidays. Also, AirAsia X out of Don Mueang offers onward connections to some of the most sought-after destinations in Thailand.
This new service is great news for travellers looking to make a trip to Thailand. It increases competition on the sector and caters to a different crowd than Thai and Qantas. AirAsia X's focus is on price sensitive customers, even after the launch deals finish on August 31st 2024 you are still likely to find reasonably priced flights if you are willing to travel with a few less comforts than what offered by the full-service carriers.

AirAsia X's New Bangkok Sydney Route Timings
The airline will be adding quite a bit of capacity on the Bangkok to Sydney sector right off the bat. AirAsia X will be serving this high demand sector with 6 weekly flights with flights operating:
- As flight XJ382 every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday
- As flight XJ388 every Tuesday (second daily flight), Friday, and Saturday
As mentioned more than once already in this post the flight will be operating out of Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport and not Suvarnabhumi. So, make sure you are aware of that if you are then travelling onwards on another carrier. However, if your destination is Bangkok, then flying into this airport is quite convenient. Don Mueang is Bangkok's older airport and is located closer to the city center, just a short 30-minute ride away.
As for the timing, AirAsia has decided to cover both morning and evening with its new Bangkok to Sydney flights:
| Flight | From | To | Departure | Arrival | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XJ382 | Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) | Sydney (SYD) | 17:15 | 06:50+1 | |
| XJ383 | Sydney (SYD) | Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) | 08:15 | 14:10 |
| Flight | From | To | Departure | Arrival | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XJ388 | Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) | Sydney (SYD) | 07:00 | 20:35 | |
| XJ389 | Sydney (SYD) | Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) | 21:50 | 03:45+1 |
Finally, let's talk about the plane. The aircraft is one of the airline's densely configured A330s, the go to plane for long-haul services. The seat layout features a two-class configuration with a small business class cabin across 2 rows and the rest in an all-economy layout.
