SAS Launches Direct Flight from Copenhagen to New York JFK

SAS is ready to increase its capacity and frequency on flights from and to New York. The Scandinavian airline will be adding to its network a new flight from Copenhagen to JFK airport starting February 9th 2023. So let's take a closer look at this new SAS network expansion and all its details.

About The New SAS Copenhagen New York Flight

SAS, a Star Alliance member, will be launching its new service between Copenhagen (CPH) and New York's JFK Airport (JFK) starting February 9th 2023. This will be SAS's 9th US destination served from Copenhagen's Kastrup airport. The flight will operate under flight number SK919.

However this flight won't be the Scandinavian airline's first to New York. SAS already operates a daily connection to Newark's Liberty Airport.

This new flight won't be a daily connection from the get go although it will become in summer 2023. Moving on to the flight's schedule it splits in two. Winter and Summer will have a different schedules, specifically:

Winter SK919 Operations

• Departing Copenhagen at 18:25 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday arriving into JFK at 21:30.
• The return flight will depart New York's JFK at 23:00 and arrive into Copenhagen at 12:55 the next day.

Summer SAS SK919 Operations

• Departing with a daily frequency Copenhagen at 19:20 arriving into JFK at 22:00.
• The return flight will depart New York's JFK at 23:55 and arrive into Copenhagen at 13:45 the next day.

The flight will be operating in and out of New York JFK International Airport's Terminal 7.

The Surprising Aircraft Choice

This new flight at first will definitely not be a high capacity connection between Copenhagen and New York. SAS will be operating its new flight SK919 with an Airbus A321neo.

The aircraft offers great efficiency and is capable of covering long haul routes such as Copenhagen JFK. However its lower capacity puts the airline under less pressure to reach a decent load factor.

This will allow operations to reach a breakeven point easier than if it were to operate one of it's larger A330s. Coincidentally the A330 will continue to serve the daily SK909 flight from Copenhagen to Newark's Liberty Airport (EWR).

Airlines operating narrow bodies such as the A321neo on long haul flight is something we are seeing more of in recent years and I'm sure we'll see even more of in the future.

SAS Expanding in North America

As mentioned above this will be the 9th airport that SAS will fly to in North America. Clearly the airline is trying to strengthen its presence in north America as operations to the far east are still quite complicated due to Russian airspace still being closed.
