TAP Portugal Says Howdy to 2025 With 2 New Routes to The US

TAP Portugal, the Portuguese national carrier, is an extremely interesting airline in the European aviation landscape. It is, along with Air Europa, the only major still independent airline. It is still not affiliated or controlled by any of the major airline groups despite it being associated in rumors to Lufthansa, IAG and AF-KLM a number of times. Therefore, the airline has to find its own path to generate revenue and profits. To continue growing and expanding into 2025 the airline has just announced it will be commencing operations to two new destinations in the US. Let's find out where, when and how.

TAP Portugal – 2025 Comes With New Lisbon to Los Angeles and Porto to Boston Flights

The US market, despite a possible global economic slowdown looming on the horizon, remains strategically important to many airlines. This is particularly the case for an airline such as TAP which relies on tourists and leisure travelers during the summer months to fuel its business.

Portugal is a convenient holiday destination for US holiday makers, particularly if based on the East Coast. Portugal's position on the far west of the continent makes for short flights from the US, and its good weather and attractions d other rest.

In 2025 TAP Portugal is looking to further increase its penetration in the transatlantic market with two new flights. It will be starting up its seventh and eighth American destination. Namely:

  • Lisbon to Los Angeles (flight number TP247) – Starting May 16th 2025
  • Porto – Boston (flight number TP227) – Starting May 14th 2025

While Boston isn't a totally new destination for the carrier, TAP already operated flights from its base in Lisbon, Los Angeles on the other hand is a totally new addition. LAX is poised to become TAP's second destination on the West Coast and, more specifically, California.

Only New Generation Airbus Planes For The New Routes

TAP Portugal is among the carriers to have embraced fastest the transition to long haul single aisle flights. Its additional flight to Boston, from Porto, will be operated using the airline's Airbus A321LRs. These planes are well capable of covering the transatlantic route from Portugal to Boston offering almost unrivaled per seat economics. The cabin setup, however, isn't as good as you might see on other carriers which have adopted the A321LR and XLR (such as jetBlue and Iberia among others). It features:

  • 16 Business class seats
  • 155 Economy Class seats

However, those 16 business class seats are setup in an alternating 1-1 and 2-2 layout, meaning that not all seats have direct aisle access. They are though flat bed capable meaning that you will be able to get some decent rest during your flight.

No other choice than using the longest range capable plane on the new Lisbon to Los Angeles LAX route. TAP will have to use its state-of-the-art Airbus A330-900 which features:

  • 34 Business Class seats in a 1-2-1 layout
  • 264 Economy Class seats in a standard 2-4-2

Ex Emirates Cabin Crew and long time aviation enthusiast. I can remember loving aviation and planes since I was a very little boy. I have developed my passion into a deep knowledge of the sector and industry to offer on my sites in depth and precise analyses of what is going on. I also completed cabin crew training with Ryanair, however, I never worked for the company (more on that another time). Finally I also have taken flying lessons completing my first solo flights.
